    Hi guys,
I accidentally dropped a box on my toe today in work. It hurts pretty bad.I don't want to go to the doctor because I can't afford to take a few days off work. Does it look like my injury is serious? Will the nail fall off? What should I do?

Your foot is nearly as manky as your house. Tidy up & ring the doctor. Short term doctors bill VS. long term podiatry problems.

If it's really sore, "ouch" just doesn't cut the mustard.

    Get it checked out ffs.

Also, clean underneath your toenails. Gross, man.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,145 ✭✭✭LETHAL LADY

Looks like your toenail is a goner but you have very clean feet and toenails in your favour, could do with trimming the nails if ya don't mind me saying. If it was me I would bathe it in ice for a while to take down any swelling and then wrap it tightly in a plaster or bandage and hope for the best.

Most mens feet I've seen are far worse to be fair, but maybe tis the company I keep.

What kind of box was it and what was in the box? What were you doing with the box? How did you drop it? Are you generally clumsy or was it a once off? What kind of mountain bike have you got?

    This.

OP, I'm afraid your toe will have to go and it has to be amputated from the neck down for the highest chance of survival.

It's either Cork University Hospital or Cavan Undertakers and Haberdashery.

The nail is going to fall off. If the toes isn't broken there shouldn't be a need to go to the doctor. It doesn't look swollen either. Similar thing happened to me, just keep the toe somewhat padded...looks really sore though.

Boards gave me a "best cure for nail fungus" ad in this thread. The toes on that look way worse than the OP.

That happened to my toe a few years ago and the GP simply heated a needle with a lighter and burnt a little hole into the toenail to release the pressure under it.

Kept my toenail and there was no problem at all. I could hardly walk going in to the gp!

Worked amazingly well and didn't hurt at all !

    Get yourself to GP!

If its sore after a few days and you end up with a limp, you have a fractured big toe. Its very similar to what I had before.(I moaned about it here about 2-3 yrs ago here :P)

You'll end up going to the hospital but what they did for me was just marry the big toe with the 2nd toe using a bit of bandage tied together as that's how a big toe heals. It will help avoid you big bills :)

No I kept it on my foot. If you don't release the pressure it explodes and falls off

But he can save the nail and avoid a lot of pain this way!

Why would going to the doctor cause you to take days off work? Have waiting times gotten that bad?

Why would you not want take to some time off of work? You'll most likely still be paid as the injury happened in work. Your job will probably pay your doctors bill too.

Your toenail will probably be like that for a few months. As the nail grows the discolouration will go higher until it eventually reaches the top. Something similar happened to me years ago and the nail split between where it had been injured and where a new healthy nail started growing. Eventually the injured nail fell off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,250 ✭✭✭✭bumper234

Say goodbye to the toenail or save it? As someone said if you heat up a needle (red hot) and then using a pair of pliers push it through the nail and just slightly into the skin underneath it will relieve the pressure underneath and the nail can be saved. I know when a nail falls off another grows but can be annoying and sore when it's at that half on half off stage especially when putting socks on at 6 am on a dark winters morning :D

I'd also go with the needle to let the blood out, should be a lot more comfortable.

It stops that ****ing throbbing straight away for sure.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor nor any sort of medical professional and if you do follow my advice and get an infection then that's your tough titty.

Has happened me to OP. Was playing hurling and got a whack straight into it. Played on as you do but taking off my boot and sock after was miserable. Mine looked exactly like yours with blood all over as well. I just put it in ice and wrapped it well to prevent infection and give it support.... Nail came off eventually by itself. Was fairly painful at times.

The only thing I'll say though is that due to the pain you're in your toe will probably bend up due to reflex action. The thing is because I never went to a doctor and let the pain take care of itself my toe was always was bending up. And it still is today. That has become a problem as I've lost another nail on the same toe since due to pressure against my shoe. You're probably better off going to the GP or something. I've heard of the needle thing before but I wouldn't dare do it on a nail. The skin under is really sensitive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Rasheed

OP you really should go to the doctor. If you're not on for that though soak it every night in salt water and go around in your bare feet at home. The nail will come off itself and a new will will grow in time.

I stress at home with the bare feet by the way...
