Sorry if been asked a million times but!!!.............

So a change from home based work to on the road 5 days a week(300km a day) will not work with my current petrol car (E46 330ci) which i will keep for weekends.

My budget €7000 or less, would like something reliable comfortable and sporty/nice to look at! :D

I know it a lot to as for €7000k but i never thought id have to use anything other than my beloved CI.

    Thanks :)

Alfa would fit the bill, but reliability would concern me!

300km per week is under 200 miles, that really isn't diesel territory imo. Wouldn't a more fuel efficient petrol car be a better buy in the long run? Plenty of 1.8/2.0 litre petrol cars going for cheap money these days because of the diesel fascination.

    For example:

Alfas when well maintained would be on par with other brands, but unless OP is a car buff I'd go with a jap car. There's a reason so many taxi are japs, particularly Toyotas.

There are a few of the old shape mondeo on carzone within that budget. You'll probably get a 07 or 06 for that money. Make sure it has a service history and you should be ok as any diesel for 7k is bound to have seen alot of road. I believe they are a reliable motor and comfy as you are gonna get for that money.
Edit: there are actually some of the newer post 07 model on there for your budget that claim to have new clutch and flywheel. if they are genuine that's what I'd be going for. Sorry cant post link s I'm on the phone

The op is coming from a 330i.
I can't see a corolla being the most enjoyable car to spend a significant chunk of my life in.
If it was me I'd be all over a 159 jtdm with a remap.
He owns a 330, so I wouldn't say he's clueless about cars. Once they're looked after, happy days.
Another option would be a 320d if he's worried about alfa reliability.

True, japs doesn't really fall into the "sporty/nice to look at" category lol, built like tanks though.
How about a diesel BMW OP?

id like a 320d but they all seem to be very high mileage 150k plus, I'm not a car buff as such but I do love my cars and the driving experience of them, so dull little boxes are a non runner.

Alfas I reall like the styling of, but not sure if there diesel motors are a good as some? also getting service work carried out correctly in the limerick region might be difficult?

The Alfa diesel engine is a Fiat Multi-jet engine and has been used in Opels, Saabs and other brands for years. It was one of the best engines when launched and Opel still use upgraded versions of it in their cars to date.

Like most modern diesels they have their issues but there is nothing overly complex under the bonnet that any decent mechanic shouldn't be able to fix. Put it this way if you looked at a 1.9 CDTi Opel Vectra would you have the same apprehension as it has the exact same engine as the below 159?

Thats good to know because i always liked Alfas, plus a 159 jtdm would be a looking stablemate for the 330CI.

How far would you be willing to travel for your service?

The sweep in Waterford has a good reputation.
As does pat in new Ross.
Rs auto shop in clondrina has been recommended by a few on alfaowner.
They're a car that needs a bit more specialist attention but the indies don't charge too much.

RS Autos are gone but servicing is not a problem with these engines. Clare View Motors are still an Alfa Romeo dealer in Limerick if something major goes wrong with the car.
