Normally buy about 600 bales of wheat straw for bedding every year off one lad, went to see about getting it this year and he has given it away to a lad growing mushrooms? He says i can have the oil seed rape straw, has any body used this before? Can you feed it? Any advice welcome

Ok for bedding, wouldn't think it suitable for feeding though. Are you putting straw in a TMR?

Used straw last year to stretch the silage, might not need to this year, when we bought the diet feeder keenans suggested using oil seed rape as a feed. I here its hard to bale??

from a discussion on here a year or 2 ago, osr straw is the best for tickle factor in the rumen after oaten straw, dunno what it is like for bedding though

Have used it here before for bedding, its ok, not the best soakage though and harder to fork than other straw.Ok if rolling out a full round bale. Barley straw is the best followed by oat/wheat straw.
Never fed it, dont think there is any real feed value it it at all, high oil content but I wouldn't feed it. Fed the rape meal, its a good feed

Dont know if people would lyk this idea but were putting in 60 cubicles this year for some of the cows to bring down the amount of straw we use and we are going to bed the passage ways, would the osr straw be okay for that. Dont have the funds this year to put in a tank
