Basically yes. You'll find some people defending them but you can make your own assumptions about them.

People who DJ wearing them are either sponsored or posers.

They are middling quality at best, backed with fashion hype.

An over priced pair of fashion accessories. Poser cans really and much better cans than these around.

Are they a scam/fashion accessory - well yes and no, depending on the versions, the beats studio are complete Junk IMHO, however the beats Mixr and Pro's? Well my feelings are below.

    1. They are no good whatsoever for the studio due to the exaggerated bass end.
    2. Can you hear them well in a club when Gigging ? Outstanding YES they are bloody loud and no distortion at high levels
    3. Are they Durable? Outstanding Yes, as good or better than the majority of DJ headphones out there
    4. Do they have replaceable Parts? Yes
    5. Do they fold up for easy transport ? Yes

Personally I would not buy them even if I had the money due to being useless for production, and the Pro's are just too darn bulky for my head anyhow. However I might consider the Mixrs if I was touring in large clubs and their sole use was for DJ'ing in loud venues (and most likely if the price was lower).

At the end of the day 90% of $20 headphones will "do the trick" for DJ'ing in a pinch, so long as you can hear the cue'd track it doesn't matter what brand they are however better isolation and boosted frequencies can help in a loud club with monitors blasting at you. Next factor is comfort and then build quality.

I've been through my fair share of headphones and made mountains of bad decisions on headphones that actually sounded great but would last no more than a month or two before breaking a headband or hinge (yes V500 and v700 I'm looking at you!)

In this department the Beats are bloody well engineered and they should last years.

So they do what they are supposed to do, deliver mind numbing sound pressure levels in a professional environment without even breaking a sweat and do it night after night after night.

So are they overpriced ? At the end of the day its down to what people are WILLING to pay for any equipment, Nike or Fila ? Pioneer or Denon ?

Beats obviously did their homework when they conceived them and have come up with a professional product which unfortunately has become to many professionals what we hate due to its fashion symbolism - Mainstream.

BTW Currently I just retired my trusty MDR-V6's which have been through hell and back for the past 14 years..They still sound fantastic and work perfectly, however there is no fabric left on the headband, need a new set of earpads, could do with being re-cabled etc ... I'll still use them from time to time no doubt. So I needed a replacement was on the cards so got myself a pair of Marshall Majors after alot of testing in audio shops as they have Similar Sound Characteristics / Light weight / Small and Foldable and so build wise they feel like they will take an enormous amount of punishment.
