Will replacing EGR fix my Lexus issues?

    Hi,
I'm having EGR problems with my Lexus IS 220d. My car went into limp home mode when I was in cruise control and registered a fault with the EGR.
I took it to Lexus who cleaned the EGR but told me it may need replaced as it was the second time in six weeks it had to be cleaned.
Does anyone know if replacing the EGR will fix the problem? Or is there an underlying issue that would just cause the new part to clog up too?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

You'll probably need to replace it anyway, but there might be an underlying problem. What year/mileage is it?

If the EGR is sooting up like that it might be a fuel/air mix problem. Check the air filter and the AFM. Be no harm to scan for fault codes either. Oh and, is the car using oil, by any chance?

    Thanks for the replies guys

    It's 2008 with 65k miles.

I checked for faults and the only code coming up was a P0400 which is the EGR. I had thought the underlying problem could be something to do with the DPF, but no codes were showing up for that.

I've dipped it a few times and the oil level seems to be fine. I haven't had any oil warning lights come on either.

It was last serviced in April (before I bought it). So I'm booking it in for a service and that should take care of oil, filters etc.

I'm just reluctant to give it to Lexus to fit a new EGR if it isn't going to address the root of the problem.

Lexus are covering EGR's out of warranty on those cars if you push for it, provided it has a Lexus service history. There are also cases where the engine needed to be stripped down and the pistons replaced where the car has been driven for a long time with the symptoms, they were also doing that outside warranty.

I brought that up with Lexus and they told me they don't cover the EGR or the DPF they only do the work if the head needs replaced. The more I read about the list of problems modern diesels have relating to EGRs and DPFs the more amazed I am that car makers aren't being made more accountable! Really put off ever buying a diesel again

    Hi op

I'm the not so proud owner of a Lexus is220d 2007.

Exact same thing happened me last year, in cruise control on the Dublin cork motorway. It wouldnt go above 50mph:mad::mad:
I know nothing about car mechanics but my dad disconnected some electrics and reconnected them again and the thing was sorted.he cleaned out some filter or changed it? I' m just not sure.basically the gist of it is that crap in the filter effects the fuel going into the engine, or else the injectors could be clogged from crap either due to poor diesel or incorrect type of filter.

I can't remember when but I also had injector issues with it. Last Xmas was worst when the head gasket went! The chap in main dealer-I went off the books-told me he'd to do 41 of these so far. Now maybe he was a waffler but he was very critical of that Lexus models engine for giving trouble.

Lexus don't wanna know unless you've a full Lexus service history either. To be fair I'd there's not too many fellas with cars that age with that.

Best advice I can give you is to get to a main dealer ASAP.

Take the air hose off the turbo and check for oil.
If ERG is getting coked up you might be buring oil.

Just had my EGR replaced last wk on my 06 220 after a similar episode- went into limp mode etc... running a bit nicer and mpg up from avg 29/30 mpg on motorway to 42, if it stays like this I'll be happy...
