Note: This is NEXT WEEK's Smackdown spoilers, not this week's, which can be found >>HERE<<

WWE is taping the August 2nd episode of Friday Night Smackdown tonight in Texas. Thanks to Wrestlezone reader Drew Hawk for sending in the following live report.

    Dark Match
-The Wyatt Family def. Tons of Funk

    WWE Smackdown
    Air Date: August 2, 2013

-Michael Cole is out with Alex Riley, who looks to be the newest members of the WWE commentary family.

-Alberto del Rio comes out to start Smackdown, to name her SummerSlam opponent. Before he gets to that, he praises Vickie Guerrero and runs down Booker T, which draws a ton of heat from his home crowd. The champ attempts to name Ricardo as his opponent for the world title, but Vickie comes out tells him he's the lost the privilege to name his own challenger. She announces a triple threat match between Rob Van Dam, Christian and Randy Orton, with the winner becoming #1 contender to the world title at SummerSlam.

    (1) Cody Rhodes def. Jack Swagger

    (2) Big E Langston def. Sin Cara

    (3) CM Punk def. Fandango via submission with the Anaconda Vice

    (4) Divas Championship Match
AJ Lee def. Kaitlyn to retain via submission with the Black Widow. Layla got involved in the match, turning heel and leaving with the champion

-There was a segment, likely for the live crowd only, to honor Booker T in his hometown.

    (5) Christian def. Randy Orton and Rob Van Dam to become #1 contender to the world championship

-Christian and Randy Orton shook hands after the match. Alberto del Rio came out and kicked Christian in the head to end Smackdown.

Think we saw the Christian win coming, but Alex Riley is the new Smackdown commentator? Good week for him.

Why would they book Orton in a three way no.1 contender's match while he has the briefcase to do the 24/7 on the WWE champ  ?

According to the spoilers on FAN, Orton made some vague reference to unifying the titles.

Which is appreciated, if true, as Cena didn't even address it when pointing out Del Rio during the 'pick the challenger' segment from last week.

Christian is unifying them so. A great day to be a peep.

Saw the Layla turn coming after how she praised Kaitlyn in the interview. Clearly got fed up of Kaitlyn and wanted to move on to feeling up AJ. And Layla's outfit was pretty nice, with nothing showing but her leg.

Said A-Ry is covering for JBL while he's out.

Josh took some hit during the Cody interview. Looked sore.

Thought the Fandango-Punk match was savage. Punk let Fandango have a surprising amount in the match.

Just alerted to this Punk on Fandango:
ON WHY FANDANGO IS A WRESTLERS’ WRESTLER:

He knows how to wrestle. Guy’s been with the company for a very long time and he got a break doing something flamboyant and I think it’s great. But, over time, you’re going to find out that he can go. Bell to bell, he can wrestle. You’re going to find that out.

From an article on Wrestler's Wrestler's on WWE.com this week:

He seems to pick guys he likes and let's them get decent offense in. Rare he does a squash which is great.

Side note: AJ's finisher is tremendous.

To watch maybe but like I've said before why doesn't Kaitlyn just fall back, landing on top of her?

Same as when someone puts a sleeper on someone like the Big Show, all he has to do is fall back and squash them.

    It's wrestling?

Why doesn't everyone kick out of every move?

At least he is guaranteed to be on the Art of Wrestling when he gets released. :p

Yeah this was a good episode of Smackdown. Punk and Fandango was really good and the main event was strong too Christain seems to know a thing or two about putting together entertaining multi man matches.

I thought the Layla turn would come at the last PPV even predicted it in the thread. Alas... Has any one a YouTube link too it?

The three way main event was awfully good. It's been a good week of wrestling.

Orton countering rolling thunder was pretty sweet!

The backslide counter was so smooth. Loved that his music played for an awkwardly long time after he won.

Christian is awfully bland and very mediocre in the ring. Not ever gonna be WWE Champion. Ever.

Say what you will about Christian, whether you like him or not, or whether you consider him a viable headliner or not, but he's always been nothing but a pillar of consistency in ring.

I don't know if they will change it to a 3 or a 4 way or that Christain will lose his title shot in the next 2 weeks but as it stands Orton doesn't have a Summerslam match.

I expect some unhappy Boardsies 4/10 Summerslam that Monday morning.

The main reason I can see them not doing it is that everybody expects him to cash in. And it would involve Orton actually turning, something that it would appear will never actually happen.

Imagine if they are using the MiTB briefcase just as means to prove the reddit man wrong. Actually it isn't that hard with WWE given how vengeful and petty they can be.

I would rather Christian as champ then Del Rio whos painfully dull and his ring announcer is arguably more popular then he is.

If Christian wins its getting 10/10 from me and I mightn't even rent it. Lol at Christian being bland btw when 90% of the roster are dull as dishwater or have no personality beyond a 1 dimensional trait.

Maybe they'll really try and get Bryan over by having him beat Cena and then beating Orton via Rko into unbreakable small package.

Would cement Bryan and set up a program with heel Orton. Maybe even a 3 way with Cena.

Probably none of this though and a clean cena win after 17 seconds

Great main event but while Christian is my (not Liz's) Boards Adopted Superstar™ he seems to have lost the crowd while injured.

If anyone's cashing in it should be a comically wet Sandow with bits of seaweed hanging off his case and a starfish in his beard.

Very cool. It's mad the way Orton's body twists from the waist down once his upper body has safely landed RVD. Just goes to show the core strength these guys have.

It's amazing how good Orton is, especially considering it looks like he's barely even trying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Andy_rse

His timing is impeccable. He could have his own hightlight reel of his counters alone!

Alex Riley saying he would be insulted if he were asked to be protector of the case was funny.
