Just tried logging into my email there and am getting this message:
You're currently signed in with an Office 365 email account, which can't be used with Outlook.com. Please click here to sign out of your Office 365 account, then use another Microsoft account to sign in to Outlook.com (for example, your hotmail.com, live.com, or msn.com account).

    Anyone else getting this?

    Dear Students,

During July the University of Limerick is migrating student email from the current Microsoft Live@Edu system to Microsoft Office 365. We expect your account to be upgraded by Friday, 26th July.

    Why is this upgrade happening?

Microsoft is discontinuing its Live@Edu service throughout 2013. Microsoft is moving all educational customers to its Office 365 system in order to provide more services such as Lync, SkyDrive Pro and Office services. This is a phased migration and during the summer months students will only have access to Email. Other services will be released during September and October.

What does this mean for you?

After the upgrade you will have your UL Student Email Account and a separate SkyDrive account. Both accounts will have the same user name and password that you currently use to access your student email.

    1. Microsoft Office 365 Email Account: this account gives you access to your University Student email and is administered by the University of Limerick. To access this account you will use your UL Email address, e.g. 1234567@studentmail.ul.ie and Student Computer Account password. After the upgrade, you will still be able to access emails, calendar and contacts just as they did before the upgrade.

    2. Personal Microsoft SkyDrive Account: this personal account will give you access to all your existing SkyDrive content, Messenger, and other Microsoft services. Note that the University of Limerick no longer administers this account. As a result, we cannot reset the password for you. To access this account you will use your UL Email address, e.g. 1234567@studentmail.ul.ie and the Student Computer Account password you used prior to the email migration.

What do you need to do?

    Complete the following steps:

    1. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 or 7, upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer.

    2. If you use Outlook to read your email and you are using Microsoft Office 2003, upgrade to Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 to continue using Outlook.

    3. From Friday, 26th July access your email and calendar at https://www.outlook.com/studentmail.ul.ie.

    4. From Friday, 26th July access SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com.

    FURTHER INFORMATION AND SUPPORT

For more information about the Email upgrade, see the ITD website Outlook Live Student Email.

    2. Close your browser
    3. Reopen web browser and type the new link: https://www.outlook.com/studentmail.ul.ie

Wonder what the benefits are of the new system? A lot more annoying to use this specific URL to sign in now rather than the usual live.ie or whatever.

At least MS haven't changed the IMAP settings for the migration, so it's just the webmail frontend.
Still really awkward, but that's no news with Microsoft products in UL.
