For it to be effective, 1st missed day of her period, provided her cycle is regular. If it is irregular, it can be a week or more before a positive result would show. First urine of the day is usually the best as it is the highest in hcg (pregnancy hormone) concentration.
However, testing as early as the day you miss your period can show a negative result when in fact you are pregnant. So you would usually test every 2 days or so until about a week after a missed period. At that stage, if no period, and no pregnancy it might be worth visiting a doctor.

So if we had unprotected sex last weekend the 20th and 21st twice on both days and she gets her period on the 5th of each month. Which would be two weeks, would it be too soon to do a test next Saturday ?.

Not too soon, provided that its the first morning urine, and you use a decent test. I know women who have gotten a positive on Clearblue or First Response tests up to 4 days earlier than their period was due.

Did she take the morning after pill? if so that can throw out a regular cycle and its not unusual to have a delayed period after taking it.

No she didn't take the morning after pill as we are planning for a child.
So it's ok to take a test first thing Saturday morning.

    Thanks!!

I'd say so. Best of luck then for Saturday.

But don't be surprised if the Sunday test is negative. Do one every couple of days until her period comes (or hopefully doesn't come) or you get a positive test. Testing very early (i.e. before period is due) can be unreliable in that you can get a negative test but be pregnant. It depends on the amount of pregnancy hormone in her system and when testing early the concentration may not be enough.

But of course if it's positive then that means enough pregnancy hormone is present and you can start to celebrate!

The only word of caution I would offer is not to get too hung up on testing very month from the earliest opportunity. The more fun you have the better chance of success. Nothing kills the romance more than pressure (and it can affect cycles and fertility). So don't put pressure on yourselves. Test on the first day of a missed period, and go easy on yourselves. Most couples take on average 6-9 months to conceive, so loads of time for practicing!

    Good luck!

She took a test Saturday which was negetive. She has been getting cramps last week. Her period is due today although they haven't arrived yet and she said her breasts are a wee bit tender when she woke up this morning. She is peeing a lot today

Don't read too much into symptoms. Early pregnancy symptoms are very similar to premenstrual symptoms so it could be either. Give it 2 days, if still no period test again. Good luck.
