    1. Don't take risks
    2. Don't take risks
    3. Don't take risks

    - Wherever you intend on working/building make damn sure the entire area is lit correctly and barricaded off from mobs to start with. A two-block-high wall or trench with an overhang at least every second block around the upper level will keep almost anything out.
    - Keep your Hunger above 90% always and plenty of food to keep it that way. Have that health regen ready to go so its always there when you need it and by extension always keeping your Health topped off too.
    - Heights are risky by nature. Be very careful around them - frequently the end of a Hardcore map comes not at the hands of creepers or withers or mobspam or lava, but the humble not-spotting-that-hole-that-goes-into-that-ravine. Be risk-averse when dealing with tall structures and on that note NEVER stand on or under the block you are mining for any reason.
    - Creepers are the enemy, due to their 1shotting potential. Stay away from mysterious cave systems, the bottom of cliffs and combat in general until you have at least a full set of lightly-enchanted iron armor. You never know where that creeper is until its too late... at least with decent armor you might survive a partial hit from an explosion.
    - Unlike regular games, avoid spelunking like the plague, especially at lower y-levels. Its too darn easy to take big risks early on and get corralled by mobs into a waiting creeper or corner or to miss a small hole in the floor and end up going for a swim in a lava lake. Either way its a sure ticket to the title screen and ensuing map deletion. Carve out your own correctly-lit mines, block off any access to cave systems and be careful as hell as soon as you hear a bubbling noise nearby...
    - Again, practice EXTREME caution whenever you are near lava or the remotest possibility of lava, including every fraction of every second spent spelunking in low-y caves and the Nether. And on that topic, try to keep solid inflammable blocks (both normal and gravity-based ones like some sand/gravel) and either a bucket of water or later a fire resist potion close to hand at all times, and on your hotbar ready to go whenever in such a high-risk environment!
    - Finally, bows - especially heavily-enchanted ones - are your friends. Always. ESPECIALLY in the Nether.
