How do you deal with ignorant people?

I'm down doing a bit of study.

there's about 6 of us in the room, not a peep from anyone.

three clowns arrived in about an hour ago, two of them are sat right next to me and another girl. they have been talking literally non-stop for the past hour. Not full on room audible, half volume let's say.

The girl near made numerous attempts to let them know our frustration (cursed a couple of times). eventually she just got up and left, when she did they started bad mouthing her.

It's fcuking seriously annoying, one of them is an old lad seems to be giving grinds to a trollop who wouldn't look out of place in tallafornia. Seriously tempted to tell them stfu or i'll stick my pen through the old fucker's eyeball. How can people be so rude. These are all postgrad students as well I might add!

edit: The girl who stormed off is spanish. She is back now. I am less tempted to do the bertie big balls now that I saw her screensaver on her iphone and it's her and a fella.

The best thing to do in a situation like that is to embarrass them.

Calmly tell them that its incredibly rude to speak so loudly in a study area, and they're distracting people. Normally confronted with a reasonable attitude, they're embarrassed and will be quiet. The passive-aggressive route your female friend went with rarely works.

If it doesn't work, go all Joe Pesci on them and stab them in the throat with your pen, kick the bejaysus out of them, and ask them hadn't they heard? you don't shine shoes no more.

If its a study area just tell them shut up, I had a similar situation in the library a few weeks back, girl is studying away no bother then sees some guy she knows, they proceed to chat away...for about ten minutes, "hey,can you please shut up, its a library not a cafe", they gave very embarrassed apologies and shut the **** up after that, if people are too ignorant to understand basic common decency your just gonna have to tell them

Say "sorry to interrupt" with your biggest smile imaginable then follow up with "can I ask you to be quiet, everyone in here is trying to study and your chatting has been disturbing us all for the last hour, it's extremely distracting. Thanks."

I have no idea what that girl was doing with the glaring, banging & cursing, complete waste of time.

quick update lads, the ****ers kept talking so I went over and told them to pipe down. they threw a few sour faces and packed up their **** and left soon after. then the spanish one started waving bye bye to them as they left lol. she came over chatting to me then, spoke for a little bit, long story short am heading out tonight with her and some of her friends! result! will do another hour here in the books, then go and get showered and get the tins. looks like the weekend is starting early! fingers crossed I get the jump!

just realised I am meant to be taking a break from the beer for a while but ****it I can't turn down this chance!
