    Hey Guys,
So just paid for my new gaming rig off Hardwareversand and as I sit paitently waiting for this most joyeous of deliveries I thought I would hit the experts up your views on effective ssd and hdd managment.

So. I know the gist. Programs and a game or two on the ssd and all the media on the hdd. I actually have 4 external hard drives with all my music and movies so my hdd will be more or less exclusivly for games.

Things I'd like to do (ideally)

    1. Install steam/ origin etc on the ssd but keep the games (barring a few: Rome 2 Total War/ Battlefield 4/ planetside 2/ new fifa/ ) on the hdd. Does anyone do anything similar? Do you use 'steam mover' or a similar program? Or would you reccomend something else?

    2. should I move the 'my documents' folder to the hdd or would this cause confusion?

    3. I would like to keep my personal documents (CV, college essays, personal data - ie stuff I can't lose) on the ssd, but back it up to the hdd for safety. Is this possible? I don't mind losing game saves (!) but losing these would be a disaster.

Also any tips you guys might have from your own experience in how to best manage these 2 drives. I've lookied this up online and there is alot of advice with alot of different methods so any pointers would be great. I'll be tranfering all my stuff in a week or so to my new build and I'd love to get off to the right start.

    Cheers

    1) For Origin / Steam you can install the client on a different drive to the games (For steam just create a second game library folder). Not much need for apps like steam mover any more. For steam there may be a few games that still need to be installed on the steamapps folder of the install drive but I think these are pretty rare now (You can still use steam mover if you come across any of these).

    2) My Documents (Music/Videos/Downloads etc) are now called 'Libraries' in Windows 7/8, meaning you can change the underlying folder that these are pointing to (in properties tab).

    3) A simple free tool like simple like SyncToy would do for this, it keeps two folders in sync. (You can schedule it to run at certain time as I recall). There are loads of other more complex tools about like Free file sync as well, but synctoy is very easy to use.

Also have a look at game save manager. I have played around with it and not 100% sure if I really like it or not, but it has definately has some very cool features .

This is a fantastic guide detailing how to get the best out of your SSD.

That guide is completely overkill. There's a few stupid things in there too. There's some good information in there alright, but with all the time you'll have spent tweaking your system, you'll only end with a very slight improvement in benchmark scores at the cost of kneecapped system!

Edit: Actually, he's improved his guide. He now gives reasonable explanations with much more of the stuff. Previously, it was pretty much a list of - do this, this and this. Still, do not follow it blindly - use your braind and do not carry out any part that you do not fully understand and the consequences of doing so!
