Mac Book Air won't connect to internet

So my mac book air (late 2010 model) suddenly won't connect to the internet. My Dlink 655 router accepts the connection and password but it will not connect to any website.

I bought a Galaxy S4 recently and this forced me to update the router to the latest firmware as there was a bug with it. This worked fine for the last 3 days. However today the mac book air will not connect to internet (It will connect to the wifi). Other wireless devices can connect to the DLink fine and get to websites.

    Any ideas?

What error do you get on the Mac ?

    Try deleting the wireless connection.
Go to System Preferences > Network.
Select the Wifi network on the left pane then click Advanced on the bottom right.
If it's not already there click Wi-Fi along the top of this window. You should see a list of all the Access Points you've connected to in a list called Preferred Networks.
Delete your network from the list and click OK

Click the Wifi icon on the top right of your screen and after a second or two your networks should appear, select yours and enter the network key (WPA) when asked.

Let us know how that goes.

    Hi Ken,

I deleted the wireless connection and reconnected. When reconnected I get full wifi signal. When connecting with safari or chrome I get an error for no internet connection.

I'm beginning to think this is a recent issue with apple software affecting wifi from some google searches...

    Does a wired connection work?
Do a wireless connection work anywhere else?
Are you picking up an IP address from your router?

In the Utilities folder there's something called Network Utility.
Run that and use Ping to see if you can connect to a site on the 'net. For example, Ping www.google.com. If your network is working right it should resolve www.google.com IP address and begin sending packets and getting a response.

Of course you can also ping from the Terminal if you wish.

    Post back with the result.

I don't think the MBA has an Ethernet port built in ?

Hmm... interesting questions. I will have to get back to you on this as I'm not physically near the house.

I have 2 Dlink 655's. The main PC is connected wired to the top router. I haven't tried connecting my MBA to it wirelessly. I will do this later.

My galaxy S4 can connect wirelessly to the downstairs router which is the one I have issues with for my MBA. I haven't tried a wired connection to it yet.

--Edit: I remoted into my main wired machine and altered the settings on the two routers. I changed the following:

    802.11 Mode from "802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b" to "802.11n and 802.11g"
    Enable Auto Channel Scan unchecked
Wireless Channel one of them 6 and the other 12 (12 being the router I couldn't connect with)
    Channel Width Auto 20/40 Mhz

After a reboot I can now remote into my mac book air. I'm happy. I'm also still thinking this was an apple "fix" that caused it.

If you are encountering a wireless problem like this you should actually always delete the entire network interface by selecting "Wi-Fi" in the sidebar of the Network preferences window and deleting it using the minus button, then re-adding it using the plus button. The problem with just deleting the preferred network is that any other connection settings in that network interface, such as DNS, IP and proxy, are left untouched, which is the most common cause of issues like this in my experience.

Have you done any software updates on the macbook in the 3 days from when you updated the router firmware to when the macbook started acting up?

Give this a shot... Go to network preferences click on the "location" drop down menu at the top and create a new location, name it whatever you like.

With this new location selected back on the network panel choose advanced,, select the TCP/IP tab and then Renew DHCP Lease. any luck?

If that don't work you could always delete the preference files and start from scratch again.....

I will try this before I install the new router - in the end I actually gave up and bought an AC Asus router to cover the 2 DLinks. (I understand that the MBA doesn't have AC, but my phone will). Plus one router is easier to troubleshoot...

No joy, I followed the instructions on the link. However after I restarted it still remembered my routers connection details. I was able to connect to my downstairs router... but not my upstairs one.
