Strange or not? While sitting on the 10.25 Dart at bray awaiting departure on platform 1, and a delayed (by 10mins) rosslare europort service on platform 2, I was quite surprised to see a quite full service served by a 22k pull into platform 3 at 10.20 and then people getting on to go straight back in the opposite direction? As always the electric board on the 22k stated destination a ls dublin connolly. With no service alterations in place, is it case of electric power down between bray and greystones?

    Yep.
DART suspended Bray to Greystones due to lightning damage. M3 to Clonsilla services remain suspended. Full Maynooth services operating.

    25 July 2013
Due to lightning damage to overhead lines, DART services are currently suspended between Bray and Greystones.
Dublin Bus will accept rail tickets to/from Greystones.
Rosslare and Commuter services are operating fully.
This disruption is expected to continue for most of the day as repair works take place.
Separately, due to a signal fault, train services remain suspended between M3 Parkway and Clonsilla at present. Dublin Bus will accept rail tickets. Full Maynooth services have resumed with delays up to 20 minutes. Delays to Sligo and Longford services will also result.
Iarnród Éireann apologises for the inconvenience caused.

Lightning damage? Excuse me if im wrong but the lightning I was looking at last night from my apartment right beside bray station was miles from bray head. At least a 22k that would be sitting around doing nothing at this time of the day is being made the most of instead of the regular dublin bus is honouring rail tickets response

I was on that Shuttle today Rare Occurence to use Platform3 for Services, just like pre Dart Days from Greystones to Bray

22002 has spent the day keeping the citizens of Greystones somewhat connected to the Dublin Suburban network.

I've always wondered what the operational range of the railcars are, as in how long can they stay in service without needing to take on fuel/water or empty toilet tanks. Seemingly they can last a day in this case, and that's from a set that presumably operated up from the Rosslare direction earlier in the morning and thus could only have been last serviced the previous afternoon at the latest before operating an evening service from Connolly.

I'd love to see the details of a full link for a particular railcar, see what services it operates between visits to Drogheda, or see what servicing is done at Connolly or elsewhere.

A 22000 class DMU has a 1500L fuel tank in each vehicle and can be typically diagrammed up to 1000 miles between refuelling. Refuelling can be undertaken at Laois Train Care, Heuston, Connolly, Drogheda, Limerick, Cork and only if required in Waterford.

Do IE fill them up to max capacity or do they only just have enough for 400 or 500 miles as that would be sufficient and save the extra weight of excess fuel that would never be needed as most sets would get to main station at least once a day.

BTW why only if required in Waterford, is it facilities related or just it would never be required only in exceptional circumstances unlike other Cork etc which have regional services.

I think that's only at Drogheda, Cork and Portlaoise. But how often does it generally be required?

Plus Connolly (Platform 1 only), Heuston and Limerick.

They have a lot of places to carry out these for such a small network. If you can fuel and empty in Connolly why did they convert Drogheda as a train care centre when Portlaoise can do the mechanical side and Connolly the rest. Was it needed?

Drogheda was there before Portlaoise and in many ways I think it is better located than Portlaoise, particularly for Connolly side operations. It is located where trains naturally start and stop their operations. The ability to fuel and remove waste at Connolly allows you to extend a trains time away from the depot. While Connolly does have some maintenance facility, it is only really equipped for light maintenance and doesn’t really have the space or equipment required for the type of work that Drogheda can handle.

Portlaoise was supposed to be the Heuston side equivalent to Drogheda and was conceived at a time when a large chunk of Inchicore was to be knocked to make way for DART underground.

Cork and Limerick both have smaller maintenance depots to look after the trains that operate from there that don’t work back to Portlaoise or Drogheda very often, such as the trains operating Limerick to Ballybrophy or Waterford and Cork to Cobh and mallow.
