You might be able to help me. I bought a set of Cobra S3 irons for my 15 year old son at Christmas. He is doing well and has been cut 5 shots so far this summer, now playing off GUI handicap of 15. He has stretched to 6`5`` so standard clubs are too short for him. He has been quoted €270 to have his irons extended & regripped. What I'm wondering is:

Is that good value for money?

Are Cobra S3's worth spending that extra money on them?

Is he better trying to sell the Cobras and buy a new set of clubs with the extended shafts & grips?

Any advice is appreciated, I want to avoid a costly mistake.

    Thanks in advance,

    Conor

How many clubs are we talking about?
    It does seem expensive TBH.
    Where are you based?

I dont know much about the cobra S3 but it seems like a lot to spend to have clubs modified. If it was me I'd get what I could for them and get him fitted in a decent golf shop for a new set. He could get a really nice set fitted for less than €400.
Also if you just extend the shaft length the club may become a bit "whippy" which could ruin his game. Sometimes you need a stiffer shaft if you extend them, the lie may also need to be adjusted. For those reasons I would suggest fitting and a new set but I may be wrong.

like other posters have said OP, this does seem very expensive.

I would advise also in getting what you can for the current clubs and getting re-fitted.

Remember, if you just lengthen the clubs, your son could have some difficulty as the majority of the time, if you lengthen the club, you also get the loft/lie adjusted.

I imagine he will probably also need an extra layer on the grip, but the custom fitting will be able to give you all the right details.

I've seen the S3s available online new for roughly that price OP so I'd agree with the others and suggest getting a new set altogether. Don't know much about fitting TBH but don't Ping offer a couple of different lie/shaft options without actually getting fully fitted? i.e. Green Dot, Black Dot etc?

I'm similar enough in size and went for a custom fitting. If the shaft is just lengthened he'll tend to hit the ball more on the heel if the lie isn't changed.

For €275 that you've been quoted, you're just as well to trade in and get a new set of irons. Difference is negligble and you'll have a warranty to boot. American golf gave me a two year warranty (this could be standard in all shops but it's my first set of new irons bought so not sure if this can be considered a plus).

Thank you and all for your most helpful and entertaining replies.

@LightningBolt I will certainly give American Golf a try.

Son is looking for the Taylor Made - Rocketballz if anyone knows of any deals going...

I heard on the radio yesterday that McGuirks golf and TaylorMade are having a custom fitting evening in Leopardstown driving range.
I can't remember when it's on but give McGuirks a call.
You may get a good deal, and maybe even trade in your existing clubs.

    @neckedit - I am based in Delgany , I think it's seven irons.

@leroythelegend -"He could get a really nice set fitted for less than €400." - I'd love to know where he can get these and get them personally fitted for that price? please feel free to PM the details. I understand the points you raised adjusting the set up and geometry of the existing set of clubs. I agree.

It was just a ball park to be honest. I paid €550 for a set of custom fit Ping i20 irons last year. I'm pretty certain they are not the cheapest irons on the market. I would suggest picking the clubs you want and then ring around various shops and compare prices. As long as they are an approved fitter you should be fine.

I agree with the advice that you should go the custom fit route, but has he finished growing yet? He could be 2/3 inches taller next summer so it might be worth leaving it until next spring.

Otherwise you should contact Paul O'Connell or Devon Toner and see if they have any old clubs.:)
