Why aren't beds generally longer than 6ft?

It stands to reason that over time the design of beds would expand to incorporate the fact that people are becoming taller generally.

This doesn't seem to be a reality though, which seems strange to me.

The average man is around 5 feet 10 inches, surely it would make sense to make beds longer than 6 feet..

Are we destined to be crammed into short uncomfortable beds for our remaining days?

Surely this requires a government task force to investigate.

    I demand satisfaction.

P.S. We knew Bertie took money, we didn't need a pointless tribunal, other sleep related matters coule have used that spend.

    Rant\

So when you sleep planking style your feet dangle out the end to make it easier for the monsters to get. Duh!

    Well known fact.

That's the trouble with people keeping their money under the mattress. It means that the mattress is uneven & gives the effect it is shorter.

I know a guy who used to sleep with his feet sticking out of the bed.

He woke up one morning and was horrified to see that something had stripped the flesh from his feet overnight.

'Old Skeleton Feet' we call him.

Blame standardisation I say. If the size of beds varied then so too would the size of duvet covers and such, so it'd be even more of a pain to buy one. Having said that I am over the six foot region but most of the time end up sleeing in the fetal position, so tis all grand.

Most bed-makers are jealous short-arsed Chinese men.

Only single and double beds are 6 feet long, as typically only young people sleep in these beds.

Adults sleep in Queen or King sized beds which are 6'6" = 7'0"

Anytime I've bought a bed, I've to make sure to get one that didn't have a sticky-up footboard getting in the way of my danglesome feet. I'm 6'5" and the foetal position doesn't work for me anymore. It wasn't even overly comfortable when I was a foetus, if I recall correctly.

Because your average person doesn't sleep in a straight line.

Many people crouch or bend in their sleeping position. I'm 6'1'' and I've never had a bed that was too short for me, even though if I were to lie straight as a rod it probably would be.

One of the many advantages of being a unsociable loner, I get to sleep diagonally in the bed.

My bed is fairly standard and has a 2 meter length mattress on it

Most adult Irish double size beds are 190cm (6foot 3inches to you dinosaurs that understand metric) at least. King and Queen size beds are longer. European size beds which can be bought in Ireland are 200cm (6'7") long.

Is that from head to foot or from foot to head?

For the same reason that trouser legs are generally less that 36"

An uncle of mine was 6'7", and a bachelor. In the 50s he'd drive to Inchydoney for a swim and some sun. Then a few pints before returning to his car (a Fiat) where he'd remove his shoes and settle own in the back seat for a sleep. Blazing hot, with the both windows open, he'd prop his head on the one window and stick his feet out the other. All went well for years until a passing Irish Wolfhound pissed into his right ear one day :)

    I've wondered this often lately.

I'm about 5 foot 9 and my bed feels just the right length for me, but certainly wouldn't want it any shorter.

Most of my friends are 6ft plus and I'd imagine it's a bit of a discomfort for them.

And that's before we start talking about the Peter Crouch's of this world

My beds too narrow. I bought the widest I could get, but when I wake up the tip of my todger is still always asleep from dangling down over the edge all night. I am thinking of modifying an ironing board and setting it up beside the bed to offer additional support.. ok, ok, my feet dangle over the end. Why are beds so short? I want a 10' bed, so I can roll around bit.

Ikea do big beds. I got mine there. I'm tall. So are Nordic people.

I'm gonna get the appropriate size matress at some point :pac:

I've the same problem. I have a couple of theories:
    1. We're all here living in rented accommodation
    2. Shorter beds are cheaper
    3. Our "double" bedrooms are what normal people who call single bedrooms.

Am I far off the mark?

You need to be longer than your bed so you can grip your feet to the end of the bed when you're lashing the arse off your girlfriend/boyfriend/farm animal etc.

I do this and I'm only short. I have ACRES of space :)
