    Hi Folks ,
after a bit of advice from anyone with knowledge of Golf Mk4s
Car is not starting no spark at plugs when cranking .
I have heard from a few sources it could be a crank position sensor fault . I also heard that on this particular engine , I will have to remove gearbox, clutch and flywheel to get at it:eek: Can anyone confirm if this correct ?

engine no is AHW282462 if it is any help . I have had a quick look down the back of the engine but it was just getting dark and could not really see anything down there .
I would appreciate any help on this.

It should show up on a diagnostic scan if it's at fault.

Thanks for the reply Hal ,

yes I need to get a scan done , I am trying to get someone to call at the moment as the car is not mobile ,

my query above still remains, does the gearbox have to come out to get at these sensors?

Well a quick google and I get this:
On 1.4 and 1.6 golf mk4's that have a dual over head cam then the cranksensor is on rear of the block.

    Hal.
Thanks for the link , look like my initial information was not correct ,
I am getting a code read done today , so hopefully this should let me know what is the issue with the car not starting .

The crank sensor is pretty awkward to access on them but you don't have to take out the gearbox.

They don't give much trouble on them in any case so I reckon it is unlikely to be the cause of the problem here.

    George ,
thanks for the reply on this, I have someone who is going to code read this today ,I will have more info after that .you say that these crank sensors do not give much trouble . Have you ever seen an issue like with a complete loss of spark and if so, what if you can remember was the root cause.

Just in case anyone has the same issue with a MK 4 golf petrol ,

The problem was traced to a loose connection on the plug which goes into the ignition coil . It took a while to find it , but got there in the end and car is back on the road
thanks to all who replied on this.
