    Howdy Folks,

Have been thinking about taking up both these instruments for the past while, was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on where to start?

Would probably buy 2nd hand versions of each to start out, I remember when learning the guitar I got a cheap acoustic (new from Waltons) and the action was really high, near cut the fingertips off me :)

Any advice would be much appreciated, what to look out for, expected prices on half decent versions of each, what you recommend avoiding etc.

I know the request is a bit vague but any info would be good.

    Thanks in advance
    Al

I bought a mandolin a while back. Tricky to get used of the tuning (GADG) having spent the best part of two decades playing guitar.
You can pick up a new fiddle cheap enough. Just needs to be set up right (like everything). Banjos come in at couple of hundred (ish) for something decent and playable new. Any cheaper might be a piece of sh@t (probably).
I wouldn't spend much as you might end up never playing them. Fiddle is especially hard to play, as someone crossing over from another stringed instrument at least.
