Car Insurance For A Diabetic

    Hello Folks.

My father sold his car 3 years ago as money was tight so he's been off the road for 3 years. He wants to purchase a car now in the region of a 1.8 2001/2002 bmw petrol.

He has driven since he was sixteen and he is now 72 years of age now and never had a claim or a penalty point ever.

The problem is... he is a type 1 diabetic and he is worried that he will get a huge quote because of this illness.

My question to you is this... Do you think the car insurance quotes would be too pricey because of his illness or would it just be an extra hundred or two dearer ?.

He will be contacting the insurance companies in the next few days but i would like to hear some imput from other drivers that are diabetic and how they got on.

    Thanks

    Zenno.

For starters as he has been off the road for 3 years his ncb has more than likely expired. They are usually only valid for 2 years.
Unfortunately he could be looking at a big quote even before he declares his health issue.

I forgot about the no claims bonus, but i told him there and he said that could be a problem in itself like you said before he even declares his health issue with the insurance company. It's not looking too good i suppose.

Get a quote for 3rd party fire and theft if hes looking for a 2001 2002, it will be a lot less than full comp.

I'd check how long his NCB is out of date, if its no longer then 3 years there is atleast one provider from recollection in the market that will take a NCB 2-3 years old.

As for Diabetes there be no loading with insurers but many insurers would request a Medical Questionnaire or/ and letter from GP certifying that the potential driver be fit to drive.

Thanks. yes his no claims bonus is exactly 3 years now. I wonder why most insurers cut-off the no claims bonus after 2 years because he has been driving 59 years and you could say he has 59 years no claims, you would think that would come into it, but i'll get him to check it out.

Where are the mods for this forum? I have reported every one of these almost 10 year Zombie thread revivals over the last few days and nothing.
