reconditioned engine fitted - keep or move on?

    Hi All,

Had the awful experience last month of having to replace the engine in a Passat 1.9 tdi. Car is driving well at the moment, do you think I should move it on or keep it? Its 08 with 97k miles.
If moving it on should I expect to take another hit on the trade in value (to add insult to injury) and lastly, should I know how many miles were on the reconditioned engine? I was asked this question and felt a bit silly as I didn't think it was relevant. I have a one year warranty on the engine.
    Thanks for any replies

I would want to know the mileage and whether or not the timing belt has been changed on the new engine and also what do they mean by reconditioned. Is the car running well. Make a decision then.

My dad had the engine replaced in his laguna with a second hand one with only 20k miles on it. Six years later there hasn't been a bother with it.

If you spent money on replacing the engine then you might as well get some value from it.

Was it much cheaper to fit a reconditioned engine instead of a new one?

Do you know why the engine needed replacing?

That sounds like a good result! Yes timing belt and water pump replaced to!

Quite a few thousand apparently a new one is around 8k, was charged almost 3k for the reconditioned one!

I'm not well up but apparently it ran a bearing, a bolt holding con rod in position undid itself......all I knew was it was sudden and without warning.....engine seized.

If you had a full service history you should have complained to VW as that is a common design flaw on those engines.

That's terrible, sorry for your troubles :(

8k to replace that ancient design PD engine is ridiculous money

I'm with Frankie Lee there, did you contact VW? They really should pay a lot or maybe even the full bill of an engine replacement if the car has a full service history with a VAG dealer.

For the record, I didn't go with the new engine 8k option, my job cost 5k:mad:

I posted a thread a while back about a similar problem a friend had with a focus, engine blew, dealer charging a fortune, he ended up replacing it with a reconditioned one and hasn't had a spot of bother since, keep an eye on it for the next year, might as well get the warranty out of it, it you feel like changing after that then change.

One thing to note though, just because the engine was reconditioned doesn't mean there was some damage to it in the past, it could very well have been taken out of a write off, and had been treated well in it's past life.
