Running and strength training

    Running and strength training I'm told is not a happy marriage, personal trainers who are fixated with weight lifting and intermittent fasting go on about what a waste of time distance running is. I suppose my question is... is there anybody on here who is able to balance the two regimes (and I mean real weight lifting, not just light body weight training). If so what do you do? Unrelated but here is the Oatmeal for those who haven't seen it yet http://theoatmeal.com/comics/running :D

    Yes there are many who used weight lifting as part as their overall training regime working on Olympic styled lifts. The aim is functional strength and explive power.

    If your looking for hypertrophy (i.e bulking up) then running is the wrong sport however if you are looking for functional strength and conditioning they go hand in hand provided the muscles worked are sport specific

    Couldn't have put it better than ecoli.

    I met a guy in the finish area after my first marathon tough who clearly did some kind of hypertrophy training as his chest/shoulder area was huge. He did it in 3:29 so he wasn't jogging. He probably would have done better if he had been smaller up top and he was disproportionately big on top compared to his legs which might have been his choice but also could well have been the product of running. He also wasn't carrying any extra weight other than the big muscles which would have helped.

    I have expletive power. Just last Saturday in the IMRA run up Lug I asked myself what the $%^&ing $%^& was I doing there, in the $%^&ing heat, half $%^&ing dead, and saying I'd never $%^&ing do it again.

    Looking forward to the next outing Sunday mind you.
