Living Costs

Sorry if this has been asked before, but would anyone be able to give me an approximate idea of the cost of living in Galway for the academic year?

I am eligible to receive a grant, and I have worked out that, after rent, I will have around €75 - €80 per week left to live on. Is it feasible to manage on that?

I intend to return home maybe once a month, with a return ticket costing €30. Refuse is included in the rent, although I will also have to pay for internet and electricity separately.

I would most likely be going out once or twice a week, I know that most nightclubs do not charge entry.

Also, how exactly does the Student Assistance Fund work? Is it a one-off payment, or can it be sustained over the course of the year?

    Any information would be appreciated.

75-80 is fine to live on. Buy in Lidl/aldi, don't go crazy on the beer, and you'll be fine.

Don't know much about Student Assistance Fund other than to keep receipts.

Did you get conformation of your grant already?

No, nothing has been confirmed yet, but there's no reason I shouldn't get it.

If you manage your money carefully, €80 a week should be fine. Thankfully, buying food and drinks on campus is cheaper than a lot of campuses (e.g. UCD) because most of the cafés are owned by the SU. Keep an eye out in Tesco Metro for yellow labels--you can get up to 90% off the price of things because they haven't been sold by their use by/display until date (and are still edible)!

If your house gets internet-only UPC, then it costs €40 pm (so for a 4-person house, it'd be €10 pm per person). Electricity is a difficult one to estimate. One of my housemates kept leaving the immersion on, so we were getting bills of €300-400 during the winter! (Grr...) Don't forget heating as well! Again, a hard one to estimate. A €200 delievery of oil (so again, €50 pmpp for a 4-person house) should last you most of a semester if you're frugal and its not too cold. Having said this, I'm assuming you're living in private accommodation. Most of the student residences have all the bills factored in, I think.

Most nightclubs have free entry with a stamp before midnight, then €2ish thereafter. The college bar had €3 pints and vodka & dashes on a Wednesday last year, just so ya know!

If you have any other questions either about living costs or Galway in general, just ask or PM me. :)
