This is really freaking me out. This is the 2nd one we've found in the house this week. This one is about an inch long but the first one was 2 inches.

What's attracting these to come into the house?

It looks like the Sexton beetle Nicrophorus investigator which are part of the Silphidae family of carrion or burying beetles. They are mainly seen in spring and summer when they are attracted to light.

No need to freak out, yeah it looks like a Sexton, a death watch bettle. They tidy up the woodland by burying dead things. Is it possible you have a dead mouse that is attracting them in?

Definitely no dead mice. My OH is obsessive about blocking up every hole ensuring that we don't have any 'visitors'

    Attracted to carcusses.....

I'm not generally bothered by bugs and spiders but seeing a 2" beetle crossing across your sitting room floor was enough to cause chaos in the house

In that case, no need to even worry about any dead creatures. :)
