Hello there, new to this forum so apologies for any newbie mistakes,

I am upgrading from a 02 focus hb and looking at the newer mk2 model in a 1.6 petrol or diesel. I'm hearing there alot of problems with the diesel ( as in turbo and dpf failures) My main question is is it worth getting the diesel for fuel savings if the maintenance will be higher, ( i drive 350 miles a week going from cork to clonakilty) Should i look at other cars my budget is around 3/4 grand plus whatever i get for my own one. I intend keeping it about a year and then upgrading again

    thanks in advance!

With your mileage it is worth getting a diesel. If your dead set on getting a focus then the 1.8 Tdci is the one to get.

Get a diesel also look into a Volkswagen or a Toyota.

I bought an 06, 1.6tdci focus in 2009. I got a year out of it. The turbo blew when there was just 50k on the clock. Brought the car to ford and they quoted me 900 for a new turbo. They took the car started work on it and rang me a few days later and told me there was no point putting in a new turbo as the engine was screwed. It was completely clogged up after the oil had solidified in it like a coal like substance. They told me they could clean out the engine but I'd probably get 6months before the new turbo blew as they wouldn't be able to clean it completely. I need a new engine so I sourced one from a crashed 06 focus. Anywho they put in the new turbo and engine, took the car for a test run and guess what happened. Pop, new turbo and engine gone. Anyway I flogged the car for 2500 without an engine and ended up paying ford 2000 for all the work. And I'm still paying back the bank for that car. I got a 08 1.6 petrol mondeo and never looked back. Avoid the tdci engine at all costs. I have heard of this happening quite a lot. Even happened to a lad I work with who had a 07 tdci Galaxy. Even peugeot rejected the tdci engine. They are brutal. Only consolation I got from that ordeal was that I got the money back on the engine I sourced.

Cheers for all the help lads, think the diesel is just gone from my options!

no one thinks the petrol 1.6 would be worth my while???

The 1.8 Tdci is fairly reliable i wouldn't count it out.

Someone else said that the tdci engine at all costs? Or they may have been referring to the 1.6 tdci engine

I don't see the point in only keeping it for a year imo.

    Just ambition to upgrade further

My experience was with a 1.6 tdci but a mate in work had a 1.8tdci and he went through the same as me.

Just to play devils advocate - I bought an '05 1.6 TDCi Focus Ghia (with the 110 BHP engine) in 2008 and have no complaints. I've put 160,000km on it and the only problems I had were EGR valve (about €800 I think) and injector seals (again about €800 I think, don't have the receipts at hand). Not too bad in 5 years / 100k miles.

As I recall, all the reviews, reports etc. at that time were positive about that engine and it was recommended over the 1.8 TDCi. I suppose a lot changes in 5 years :)

That's your choice at the end of the day but financially it doesn't make a lot of sense.

You will loose more money changing your car twice in the space of a year rather than either holding what you have now for another year or keeping what you buy now for longer than a year imo. If you are happy with that then by all means grand but even if the amounts are smaller your still loosing. Just saying.

not if you buy smart, bought my focus for a grand last year, got an offer of 1500€ last week, have my eye on a 06 focus now for 3000, that's not going to lose any money in an year,

cheers to everyone else for their comments

Well a €3k 2006 Focus diesel could have a few surprises with it but best of luck if you can do it.
