Sending my car in for my first service with these guys next week.

From their website i see its all 'fixed price' servicing these days. An interim (basic) service costing 159e. I think i may need front brake pads too, and its quoted at 159e on the site also. While a major service costs 300e, does this include brake pads???

I've never sent any car (im only driving 5 years) to a main dealership before, i've always used an indy but i want to keep a good service history with the Audi.
So can anyone who has used these guys before advise if there are hidden costs i should be aware of ? Im just wary.

    Thanks :)

I doubt very much brake pads are included in the price of a "major" service. You really need to ring them and find out what exactly is the difference between an "intermediate" service and a "major" service.

Is it a new Audi ? Are there warranty reasons for bringing it to them? I think you are Bananas otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Jhcx

I was talking to the lads there. The 159 is your oil change, filter change and your computer diagnostics system health check. They will inspect the car and do up a list of what needs to be done from this point you can choose to get Audi to do the work or sleep on it .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,702 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

Brake pads wear depending on driving style, they are replaced when required and are never included in a menu (fixed price) service. They will ring you if they think the pads are worn and ask you if you want them replaced.

    2008.
I want to get the basics done in Audi and get that on the log book for re-sale reasons. I would try and get anything major (if needed) done by an indy.

Yeah thats what i thought alright, i assume that included pollen filter. I should hope so anyway. Although the brake sensor isnt on the dash yet, i can hear and see that its on its last legs.

Best to get an indy to do brake pads, but sensors need to be replaced also?

I'll withdraw my comment, I may have been too hasty with it, one experience isn't enough to evaluate a garage.

If they are like BMW then you will need to replace the sensor at the same time as the pad, as the sensor wears down with the pad. Make sure your mechanic orders both too as with BMW they are separate parts.

Yeah thats what i thought. Cheers Bazz.
The price on the website is 159e for brake pads from Audi ND.. and this is exactly the hidden costs i was wary of. The sensors will need replacing too, and i've a feeling the quoted price of 159e is too cheap for both replacement parts!

I wouldn't say so to be honest. If a garage is quoting for changing the brake pad then I would expect that price to include the wear senor also. The wear sensor part is not that expensive, on BMWs at least.

give the service department a ring and get a quote for everything you need done and ask about any extras etc. ive been using them for the last 4 years and they are exceptional out there. have never had any work recommended to me that didnt need to be done, they do a full visual and diagnostic health check on the car so you can see any thing that needs to be tended to.

On VAG stuff the wear sensor is included with the pads rather than being a separate part like on BMWs, Mercs and some other cars.

Regarding Audi North Dublin I have seen a good few of their estimates and any extra work on top of the fixed price jobs is eye-wateringly expensive.

thats true, they are a main dealer so labour is incredibly expensive, but if you want a main dealer stamp and genuine parts etc thats what you pay! unfortunately. if you dont know a decent reliable honest mechanic main dealer is the only choice

Good to know when the time comes to change mine.

OP, did you find out what the difference is between the intermediate and major service?

Yeah I have seen that 159 euro service advertised... I wonder if thats for all Audi or if there is a engine size limit.

No way my breakpads will be included in the price though

    Yes.
Interim is simply oil/filter change. Nothing else.
The major service is the above + pollen filter + plugs.

I have a audi a4 2006,theres 143,000 kms on clock, the service mainual says it was last serviced in 2008,it says nothing about changing a timing belt, will this need to be done straight away, anyone know?

I would get it serviced straight away anyway and let the mechanic do a timing belt inspection - 5 years since last service?

Is there a dual fan in your Audi. I know in my A3 there is. it comes on after a few seconds when the A/C is running. possibly nothing related but just a note to point. says it in the manual(somewhere) as well about the fan. In the A3 the A/C is always on unless you switch to Econ mode not sure if thats the same setup in other models

For cars upto 2 litres (which is basically 95% of cars sold these days) and aged between 3 and 10 years old.

Full terms and conditions in ad or on website.

not sure what type of fan it is,i think its a temp sensor on the engine telling the fan its too hot,its very annoying, its like bein the cockpit of a jumbo plane about to take off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

It's probably a faulty coolant temp sensor. Any half decent garage should be able to diagnose and fix it very easily.

That's normal. It's the feeling of power and superiority you get from driving an Audi. It unnerves a lot of people but you'll get used to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Im sending it in for the major service at 300e. Oil/air filter and plugs - the basics. Pricey enough !!

But as i said, for re-sale reasons I do want the Audi service stamp on my log book.

I'll get the brake pads/sensors replaced elsewhere. My indy will do it for 190e (genuine Audi parts)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,597 ✭✭✭tossy

So say Audi charge 150 Euro more than your indy, and you get the car serviced 1.5 times a year and you own the car for 5 years, that's an extra 1125 extra on servicing just for an Audi stamp? Is it really going to put 1k extra onto the re sale price?

Speaking for myself if i went to view two reasonably similar cars with equally similar specs and service history one had a book of Audi stamps (serviced by a different guy every time) and one had a book of stamps from an Indy with a good name where one of maybe 2 or 3 people worked on your car and you knew all their names...... no competition.

How old is your car? If it is new and still under manufacturers warranty there may be a case for just going to the main dealer but if you go to an independent that uses OEM parts then their stamp will be just as good as a main dealers and cost you less money in all likelyhood.

I see what you mean. The car is 5 years old. Im the 3rd owner. The first owner brought the car to an Audi dealership twice. The 2nd lad had it in audi ND once and that was the last service before i bought it. I plan on having the car for 3 more years. I suppose i dont have to get it done through Audi each time, but i def will be doing it once or twice as the owner. Maybe im being over cautious :)

For the record, the indy i use will not stamp the log book..... as he may or may not work in a VAG dealership ;)

I don't quite agree re the extra cost of maintaining a dealer stamp.
I get basic services done about once per year for 99 to 119 euro at local audi dealer. Sure its just an oil change but to be fair they do give the car a good look over when it's on the lift. Considering what it would cost to buy oil and genuine filter and do the oil change myself, I think it's great value. The trick is to not get any suggested works done at the dealer. If you are going additional works yourself or at indy, just tell it had been done. I therefore get the dealer stamp and receipt with breakdown of work done which if nothing else is a good record of mileage for the car.
I then do plugs, filters, brakes myself and keep running costs as cheap as possible.

    OP here.
I have to say the boys in Audi ND are unreal.
The service is top notch, efficient, very professional and i found them surprisingly well priced. They give the vehicle a thorough check over too.

After the original service(oil/air/pollen filter) they called me to say i needed front brake discs and pads replaced. They quoted me a price and i said leave it with me for a day or two.
I must have rang 5 or 6 indy garages to price same, and Audi ND were cheaper than every single one of them.

    Genuinely couldnt fault them.
The customer service is great, fresh croissants and orange juice, tea/coffee while i waited to chat to someone (2 mins) and they paid 10e off my taxi fair into the city on both occasions. :)

How much for front discs and pads?
I bought original fitment front discs and pads for my A5 from misterauto for €143. They were an easy diy. Interested to find out how much labour they charge for that job?

I have to say this place is a rip off - period! Service might be ok but anything after that they charge an "investigation" fee (CIRCA 150) and then to do the actual work (140 AN HOUR) more fees + obviously the parts - they milk it, i have no doubts! AVOID!

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have done the work without running it past the owner. If they ran it past then it's the owner who got themselves in that mess. If not I wouldn't have paid for work I didn't agree to.

Small bit of a spin but George Dalton in Abbeyleix is probably the best.

    Hi there,

If you would like someone to speak to you on Monday about your service please let me know & I will get someone to call you first thing. As I am sure you can appreciate if there is a fault showing with a vehicle this takes time to diagnose what that fault is & again I am sure you can hopefully appreciate this time needs to be charged for. Our technicians have been through years of Audi Factory training & we try to provide a high level of service to all our customers.

I have no doubt our Aftersales Manager would be happy to discuss your vehicle's issue with you & hopefully we can resolve the problem with as little cost as possible. I apologise if you found your experience so far a disappointment but I would be grateful if you could give us the opportunity to change your mind about our dealership. I assure we dont 'milk' any customer & do our best to provide a premium level of service at all times.

Please feel free to contact me at any stage

Thing is everything is relative. Main dealer servicing is expensive but they do provide a premium service in terms of a retail offering which most people would place a value on. The other thing undoubtedly is when a car gets old and you service and have it repaired the bills can get large and most see it as a very good push to upgrade to a newer or new car if they can afford it.
Part of the throwaway society and manufacturers and dealers are catering to that now that new cars are cheaper than ever in relative terms (ex tax) with rapid product replacement cycles. I think the average car wasn't updated for 4 years and was replaced at 10, now a model would be lucky to go for 6 years and be updated at 3.
Really you could run a well made 20 year old car very cheaply if you wished to but the game doesn't work like that as society doesnt want you to so you have to find your own way if your one of the few who do.

    No thanks!

I have no connection with audi.

I do however find it odd that you would resurrect a 9 month old thread to air your grievances to the wider community about a specific garage and then flatly refuse the opportunity to talk directly to the people who caused said grievance.

I would personally jump at the opportunity. None of my business though I suppose.

I go to Audi Cork for my servicing, and they don't charge anywhere near €140 per hour. Actually investigation into a sensor was being offered at €69 per hour, which was their labour rate. Hard to see how Audi in Dublin is supposed to be double that?
