    Spindle! Eejit!
Considering upgrading my daily hack's worn out bottom bracket with a square taper cartridge BB. This will mean replacing the 30 yr old crankset too.

Question is what size spindle do I get? Is it a simple matter of measuring the cottered spindle end-to-end and getting the same dimension in the sq taper? Are the two systems comparable? Or do you factor in the crank and bolt too for the overall dimension?

You need to choose your new crankset first. Then depending what you pick, a specific BB will be required.

The interface needs to match between crank and BB spindle. Spindle length might not be important if you go for an external cup BB. Your frame's BB shell is the other variable - in order of likelyhood it's one of - English, Italian, French.
Which ever it is you need the BB to match.

By the way, square taper is old technology at this stage. Lots of newer types with more choice. Though saying that I'm on square taper and see no reason to change.
