Does anyone know where I could use an oil extractor and how much it would cost? I've my NCT tomorrow and it looks like there is slightly too much oil in the engine, which they will probably fail on. I'd only need to take a small amount out. The car is still in warranty but the dealer is up north :(

How much is slightly too much? How high is it on the dipstick?

Are you sure? We're you parked on a slope when you checked it or anything, can have a huge effect on readings and it's unlike a dealer to overfill.

Pop into your local pet store and you might be able to get a "tank sucker" thing. Basically the same, except you will need a bucket to suck the oil out into.

Do the NCT check oil levels? Cant say I have ever seen them go near the dipstick on my car.

They do man Yep, you'll see them do it during the first stage of the test with the emissions and all.

They do, they won't do the emissions / smoke test if there's too much / too little oil in the engine, because of the risk of damaging the engine.

Checked it again on level ground earlier after a good spin (and 10 mins engine off). Still over, quite a bit above the max mark on the dipstick. It was serviced only in May at a BMW dealer so I'm baffled. Managed to get it booked in for a free VHC at frank keane later on, they said they would look at it and drain if necessary. Will keep you updated!

Any local mech should be able to extract a little for you.

Because you wil get covered in oil and most likely drop the sump plug and next thing you have zero oil in the car.

Well the guys in Frank Keane gave the car a free health check and drained half a litre of oil! I'm surprised there was this much over. I will be keeping an eye on it over the next few weeks, in case it's diesel fuel leaking into the sump. Kudos to FK. Hopefully will pass the NCT without issue now :)

Half a litre is an awful lot of extra oil to have in the engine. I would be kicking up an unholy stink at the dealer who serviced the car if I found a **** up like that.

That's serious pressure on bearings and such, really bad form on the garages behalf!

Rule of thumb is 1 litre between the max and min marks on the dipstick, it may not scale exactly above the max or below the min but it'll be close enough
