If you've been planning to climb Croagh Patrick this is the week to do it as there is a special week-long The Gathering event, culminating with the traditional Reek Sunday climb.

    http://www.croaghpatrick.org/reek-week.php

    Special events include:

    • Mass on the summit each day.
    • Historical and heritage talks in the evening.
    • Rare old photographic exhibition
    • Music session in Murrisk
    • Guided Walks
    • Special certificate of achievement for all who successfully climb to the summit and back.

A group of us climbed this past sunny Saturday (short film below). It's still my most favourite climb anywhere.

We've been told by some enlightened posters here that only old folks go to church these days
What's with all these enthusiastic youngsters climbing up a mountain (doing penance) and praying? They look happy and well adjusted, kinda like all the kids I see in my local church.

I live near the reek, and most youngsters climbing it are fitness enthusiasts heading up for the view. Do you have to be a Christian in order to be happy and well adjusted? I don't think so.

Just home from Mayo now, was a lovely day for the climb and a great view from the top.

Thought the crowds were a bit smaller compared to other years.

There were lots of tourists there climbing for different reasons and everyone was chatting on the way up and giving encouragement to keep going so a great atmosphere overall.
