Can anyone give me a technical answer as to why reseating a cpu can make a computer work again?

Highly dependent on circumstances, but the general idea is that something isn't contacting correctly in the CPU socket. It could happen due to misalignment on seating the CPU or something knocking the case/motherboard fairly hard. It's hard to do though, really hard to do and usually a last resort in my opinion if there have been no previous problems and the computer was running fine. If you bought the computer piece by piece and attempted to start it to no avail, then definitely it could be something wrong when you built it. More likely it is a badly seated CPU heatsink than a badly seated CPU 99% of the time (Pulling stats out of my ass here, but educated guess).

I've come across it tonight where the laptop would only stay on for 3 seconds before shutting down. I reseated the cpu and i was able to get into the bios and it stayed on. Strange one.
The laptop wasn't dropped as far as i know. Ever hear of reseating the cpu making the bios reset or update or anything like that?

Was it overheating and now the CPU is meaking better contact with the heatsink and that's why it no longer shuts off? It may have more to do with reseating the heatsink than the CPU.

    ^ That's what I'd think happened.

My thoughts exactly, sounds more like an overheating issue. Go out to your local computer shop or maplin or go online and buy some thermal paste and isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol is to help clean off the old thermal paste.

Also, make sure that fan is clear. So many laptop deaths are due to that fan looking clean from above but when you take off the cage usually there is dust infront of the grill.

There's 4 screws holding down the heatsink and the fan was clear of dust.
Could there be movement caused by heat?
