Evening all, as you may have seen I'm debating over a Saab 9-3 1.8t and the dealer isn't too keen on moving on the price, a reason he's giving is a 12 month warranty from http://www.mapfrewarranty.ie/?gclid=CM3GoJqCxrgCFdE84Qod12AA9Q which he says is around €300 so what I'm wondering is, are these warranties worth it? Has any one any experience of using them? Or can I tell him to forget the warranty and settle for what I'm offering, which is only €450 less than the asking price, I can't imagine he's that close not making a profit!

Are those warranties worth it? Probably not because you're buying an insurance policy and there are lots of snouts in the trough, same as is the case with the extended warranties they try to sell you in electrical stores.

But a motor dealer is properly covering his rear end by including a warranty in the deal and you should understand that this forum is littered with people complaining about dealers who told them to p1ss off when they went back attempting to get a fault fixed under a warranty.

Legally he cannot sell a car to a consumer without a warranty, unless you sign a document which accepts that the car is not intended to be used in the condition it's in at the time of the sale (i.e. 'sold as seen') but that scenario is intended to cover the sale of a wreck for breaking, not a roadworthy car that you are obviously considering.

    Of course he can.

    Of course he can.

Can he? I thought dealers could only sell cars as "sold as seen" to trade?

You thought wrong. There is no such thing as a mandatory warranty.

A consumers rights will always be protected by S.O.G.A. but that's not the same thing at all.

So I've a trusted mechanic that I want to do the service, and as I never trust a dealer to do anything close to a proper service I'd be getting it done anyway, so ill be telling the dealer that I don't want the car serviced, so he saves a bit by not putting crap quality oil and cheap filters in! If he says he can't sell it with the warranty without servicing it then I'm leaning towards just not taking the warranty and looking for extra off....
