Driving Ban

Looking for some advice on this. Friend received a letter informing him that he was no longer disqualified from driving and that he should bring the letter he received to the Motor Taxation Office (MTO) or forward the letter to the MTO to reclaim his licence. Here is the thing, he was never informed he was disqualified. According to the letter he was informed of this disqualification earlier this year but never received it and has been driving ever since. He is not 100% sure of the amount of points he has but does not think it exceeds the 12 points where disqualification kicks in. He also has his license in his possession. So what should he do, does he need to contact the MTO and ask what is going on or does he need legal advice. A ban now would have serious consequences for him.

A logical first step would to contact the person or department who sent him out the letter.

Unless there's been an error, there's been a ban which has now expired; he was in breach but it was not discovered.

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like he is also in breach of not handing in his license to the authorities and driving during a disqualification. Although he has not been stopped since he was disqualified so it looks like he has got away with it. He was prosecuted and fined for not having insurance earlier this year, this was an automatic 5 points added to the already existing 8 points he had on his license but no one requested his license so he happily continued driving and now that the ban is almost over he has received this notification. He may just ignore this letter, he has his license so he cannot claim his license from the MTO if he already has it.
