Winter Weather on Tenerife

    Hi Everyone,

I'm in the over 55s bracket of members and, with my friends, we are looking for a 2 to 3 week winter sun holiday with a flight time of about 4 to 5 hours. (Egypt not an option at the mo!) Los Cristianos on Tenerife has been recommended but not sure what the weather is like there in Mid January or early February. Can anyone fill us in? ie., will the weather be fairly dry and sunny? (about 22/23degrees would be ok) and the odd downpour wouldn't really worry us. However, if it's more likely to be cloudy and wet we'd prefer to go elsewhere....where would be the question 'tho!

Also, if Tenerife ticks the boxes, can anyone recommendation decent ** or ***self catering accommodation that has a swimming pool with "Roman Steps" rather than ladders only (1 hip replacement needs steps!), yet close enough to the beach for the men to have their morning swim, (1 recovering from a double knee replacement!)....and if there's a Mercadona/Spar or other supermarket close by that would be a welcome bonus!:)

All and any suggestions would be very welcome.

You could get 20 to 22 degrees in the day and around 14 at night sometimes it rains but not to often as for hotels i cant help you on that. I use these to book hotels you can have a look and see dose anything suite http://www.travelrepublic.ie/ . Los Cristianos is ment to be a lovely place. Here is a tenerife forum you might get a better answer as most people on this forum live in tenerife and will know all the best hotels and where about they are http://www.tenerifeforum.org/tenerife-forum/forum.php . Hope that helps you.

    Hi Ariom

I have been to Tenerife many times and it is absolutely wonderful. The area between Los Cristianos & Las Americas is really lovely. It's flat, easy to get around and has everything on your doorstep. I've gone many times in January & February and have every only had 1 rainy day, so you should be fine.

We always stay in Parque Santiago 3. It is on the beach. There are 5 Parque Santiago complexes in the area but number 3 is the best in my opinion. There is a good size supermarket across the road and the Mercadona is about 10 minutes walk.

Here is a link to apartment rentals in this complex.

If I can be of any further help, please just ask.

    Best of luck,
    JT.

    Hi All,

Have been to Lanzarote and enjoyed it but we're looking to go somewhere different this time. Thanks for the info JT especially in relation to the accommodation. It sounds just right for us. However, weatherwise, do you know what it's like in mid January to early February in Tenerife? The very odd cloudy day would be ok but a friend of mine said she and her family had 10 completely overcast days out of 12 when they went there. Perhaps they were just unlucky?

i was there in february last year and the weather was lovely for the week, northern tenerife is much more scenic than the south and cheaper too around that time of year, Puerto de la Cruz and the surrounding area has great views of mount teide

    Hi Ariom,

With weather, there are never any guarantees. But your friends were very very unlucky to have 10 cloudy days out of 12.

If you click on the link below, there are some weather statistics for the South of Tenerife for the month of January from 1996 to 2013. You will see that the majority of days are sunny. You can click on the calendar and look at February too. It is a similar story. I wouldn't worry too much about the weather, the law of averages is on your side!

Also, you mentioned someone having a hip replacement. if you do book Parque Santiago 3, you could look for one of the lower floors. Even though they are mostly only 3 storeys high, the do not have lifts in the lower blocks. I would also suggest asking where the apartment is located. I usually look for one facing into the pool or located on the left hand side building facing the Mare Nostrum hotel. You will get more sun there nad you will probably have some bit a sea view.

If you google Parque Santiago 3, you will find other websites where they are advertised About half of the apartments are privated owned, so the owners advertise on other sites such as www.ownersdirect.co.uk & homeaway.co.uk.

I recommended the place to friends about 7 years ago, and they have returned there every year since. They go again on this sunday. Ah, I wish I was going back myself right now!

South of Gran Canaria is supposed to have the best winter weather of all the Islands.
Puerto Rico or Puerto Mogan are usually pretty warm at that time of year, also the winds are lighter.

Generally speaking the weather here in the winter is really nice, over 20c. Having said that you can be unlucky and catch cloudy days but thats the luck of the draw. Usually the weather is beautiful.
The north of the island tends to get much more rain than the south due to the height and position of mt Teide and would get more in the winter. Los Cristianos is a chilled out resort.it has a couple of nice beaches, plenty of pubs and restaurants. Although it goes quiet after midnight you will find a couple of late night pubs open till about 1.30-2.00.

There are plenty of things to do here. Various boat trips for whale and dolphin watching, excursions up the mountain which is really worth the trip. Forest walks, scuba diving, the cliffs of los Gigantes. The village of Masca is scary but stunning.Car hire is not too expensive and I would highly recommend it as a cheap way to see this really beautiful island.

I can't recommend any hotels as I live here and don't use them but I believe the one recommended above Parque Santiago 3 is a good one. Check Tripadvisor for recommendations. I probably sound a bit biased and that would be because I am :) have a great holiday. :)

Thank you for the extra info in your recent posts and for the links re booking accommodation. From what's been said I think my friends would be happy with the weather in February and also with Parque Santiago 3 as it sounds ideal. As it happens I'll be seeing them tonight so we'll take it from there.

Again, many thanks to everyone for all their help.
