    So, neighbours car was flat this morning and I jump started it for him as he needed to get to work.

    Now, my battery is competely dead..no lights, no turnover, nothing.

    This isn't the issue, i have leads and a donor car...

    However, the battery of my car (Volvo S60) is in the boot. Which is locked.

    -Using the remote won't open it as the battery is stone dead.
    -There is no lock on the boot to open it with the key manually
    -The handles to lower the back seats to get into the boot from the back of the car are....wait for it....in the boot.

    So, collective wisdom of Boards, what do I need to do to get my car started??

    Should be terminals under the bonnet. BMW have this system.

    Unfortunately, that's the only electrical thing in the car that doesn't work.

    No power in the cig lighters? It could be a fuse, but, wait, aren't they in the boot?

    It will have to be open bonnet time!

    Find the starter motor and trickle charge from there. There might be a huge big chunky wire coming into the starter - with a rubber boot over it at the starter.

    Ease this back and you'll have a positive wire connected to the battery, and of course, the chassis/body work/engine block is negative.

    Now, assuming your battery has some life in it, and isn't totally shot, then you can trickle charge it up.

    Don't jump start it - some modern stuff doesn't like it - be subtle and trickle charge it.

    I've just looked at the manual for my v70 - but it doesn't refer to jump starting, nor terminals in the engine compartment. Straight from I to K.

    Interesting. I must look under the bonnet and see if it has the terminal!

    I've just looked at the manual for my v70 - but it doesn't refer to jump starting, nor terminals in the engine compartment.

    What model year and engine do you have? I might be able to look up the starter wiring on VIDA.

    It's a 03 D5. Found the terminals in the engine bay as per the manual, now my donor car has f*cked off somewhere.

    What a morning :rolleyes:

    I think there is a keyhole in the boot of that car. Look upwards from below to the side of the number plate light - it may have a plastic cover over it.

    Must my 2c but if the battery is that dead after jumping another car I'd be wondering if you have blown one of your main fuses. If you jumped the other car and it started it would have immediately put charge back to your battery... even a few seconds would be enough to operate the door locks etc. Hard to see how jumping another car could completely deplete a battery like that.

    Just to bear in mind if you charge it and still get nothing....

    I may be wrong but I think its a general rule that (usually written in the manual of the car) that the car should not be jump started or something.
    It could damage electrical parts due to a surge in electricity, for instance it could blow the ECU.

    I may have missed it so apologies but how old is your battery?
    Did yours die immediately after the other car started? Could it be that the alternator has shortened out?

    Battery age, don't know, was in the car when I bought it.

    No, it didn't shut down. I drove my daughter to her childminder (left the car running when I left her in) and went home. When I went out to head out again, stone dead.

    How long have you had the car? Batteries should usually be changed max every 4 years

    You should be able to get at the battery using what Anan1 has said. I have an S60 and can confirm this as I had to use it once when I flattened the battery. Should fire up with minimal fuss once you get a booster on the battery and then drive it for a little while to get a good charge back in. If the battery goes flat again relatively quickly then you may be looking at getting a new one.

    He would need to drive it a far bit for the alternator to do its job properly. A 15min drive will do almost nothing to charge the battery up sufficiently

    Aside for putting terminals in the engine compartment to cover this contingency, no.

    Anyway - should have bought a V70 - it's not a proper Volvo unless it has a greenhouse on the back!

    Thank God the S40 doesn't have this set up.. Although it does seem to suffer from other problems :(

    This house has had an S40 before. And a Saab 9-3 (if I remember right, the rear seat releases were in the boot of that as well)

    I'm just going to come out and say this.... I am an idiot of the highest order, just checked and I have free breakdown cover on my insurance. they have someone on the way out. In my defence, I had 3rd F&T for years, so it never occurred to me that I had changed it up to Comp last year. FFS indeed.
