A statement posted on the Coolmore twitter feed read: "St Nicholas Abbey suffered a serious career ending injury at Ballydoyle this morning, vets are currently attending to him.

"We hope to save him for a career at stud, a further update will be posted later."

Absolutely gutted. Loved this horse, and I really expected him to win on Saturday :(
Hopefully he'll be a good stallion.

Good oarse, although ill remember him most for getting stung on him when he came 3rd at the Curragh(4/11) behind Unacompanied when i did the up to incl distance bet. Knew he wasnt going to skate in that day but didnt figure he would get beat!.
Would have backed him big v Cirrus at the weekend.

You aren't remembering him at all that was Fame and Glory.

One of my all time favourites with Henry and See the Stars fingers crossed he pulls through

Nope he is quite right it was st nich, was his first run as a 4 yr old and first run since he flopped in the guineas.
Fame and Glory was never beaten by unaccompanied to my knowledge.
But you are quite right in that he was turned over at somewhere around the same odds in the same race. It's a listed race in early April. The alleged stakes I think it's called.

Really hope they can save him, he's a cracking prospect at stud.

Considering the hype that surrounded him from 2 to 3, and his disappointing run in the 2000 Guineas, he did well to win those Group Ones later on in his career. Still, he was no good going right-handed and he was always susceptible to something with a turn of foot.

St Nic was beaten on his first run back as a 4yo at long odds on, it's why we got such a decent price on him at Chester in his following run, remember having a nice bet on him that day but tbh it wasn't about the money, it was just great to see him back.

I'll never forget the sight of him powering away up the straight on the Roodee.

Some great days and some awful days (King George last year :() but he was a horse I loved.

Mentioned to someone earlier that it's like the last bit of interest is gone out of the flat season for me this year. Just hope they get him back to full health.

Sorry rounders you are right i was thinking of Fame and Glory the day he was beaten at the curragh by She's Our Mark when he was quite clearly fat.

A really likable horse but would he really get the mares at stud

    Heard its a broken leg

That's a pity. I hope they can save him and he has a long career at stud but with a broken leg that might be unlikely.

No problem, ugh yeah i remember pain from that similar Fame and Glory turnover too!.

That sure is terrible news, as good and honest a horse as you could wish for. He was a testament to O'Brien's training prowess, how he kept him running to his best season after season after his Guineas flop.

Hopefully the break is not too bad and he'll survive.

St Nicholas Abbey who was champion 2yo out of Montjeu amassing 6 G1's at ages 2,4,5 and 6 and collecting 5 million in prize money.

Is someone really questioning if he'd get mares at stud

Not the most stoutly bred, a bit slow could see him with some NH mares

In a comfortable condition in Fethard equine hospital, fractured pastern to be operated on tomorrow

    Sounds somewhat upbeat

A Champion 2yo and multiple G1 winner by Montjeu.

Of course he'd be able to get the mares if he can pull through.

A nice type of horse, no cup horse like Yeats or Fame and Glory this fella, a solid 12f horse although still fast enough to mix it up in champion stakes territory. A good looker, precocious enough at two and still trained on. Definitely has more going for him than most if not all of the Montjeu's at stud.

He'd have plenty of mares coming his way and not all NH types either.

Ah maybe im being a bit harsh we'll see, think he could have won an Irish leger though

He was one of my fav flat horse of the last few years. and in my view was underrated. In his perfect conditions he was a good as anything, baring the obvious 2 over the last few years. I remember him going of at some really silly prices a few times, and i took full advantage..

On his day he looked like he could sweep past anything ..

SNA got a bout of colic last night and had to go emergency surgery, not good!

Would be a shame to lose him.

Such an attractive horse with a beautiful penis by all accounts.

Not sure what that has to do with it, but I agree with your 1st line.

Nick Luck commented on C4 today that there was "cautious optimism" re St Nic after the colic operation

    Lets hope its well founded

Some positive news coming out of Coolmore this morning. :)
    Coolmore ‏@coolmorestud 5m

St Nicholas Abbey remains in a comfortable condition at Fethard Equine Hospital. The surgeons & veterinary team are happy with his progress.

He is in good form after another good night and along with receiving intravenous nutrition he is eating small amounts of freshly cut grass.

Unfortunately has suffered a "major complication" according to Irish Racing

Unfortunately has suffered a "major complication" according to Irish Racing
It doesn't sound too bad, as it was a mechanical failure rather than a failure of the horse to recover.
After appearing uncomfortable on Monday night subsequent radiographs showed a steel pin in his cannon bone had broken, leading to further surgery.
“This procedure was done Monday night, the leg has been re-cast and St Nicholas Abbey is now bearing weight on the fractured leg.

“This development has come sooner than we would have ideally liked, so the next week is a very tentative period for us.

“This morning St Nicholas Abbey is comfortable and is walking as well as can be expected.

“His temperament and demeanour are a tremendous plus both for him and the team treating him.”

Here's hoping it doesn't end up like the tragic Barbaro case, St Nick seems to be in much better shape than Barbaro ever was after his operations.

ST NICHOLAS ABBEY has enjoyed "his best week since his initial surgery," with the six-year-old pleasing connections in his recovery from his career-ending and life-threatening injury.

    Suffered another setback.
    From Coolmore:
St Nicholas Abbey has suffered a setback over the last 24 hours having developed mild laminitic changes in the left fore.

"This is disappointing as he is now weight bearing and walking well on the operated (fractured) leg which has healed amazingly well to date.

"Although laminitis could be a life threatening complication we are hoping the condition will stabilise.

Really feeling bad for the horse now, poor thing how unlucky can it get. Seems like a tough cookie though, so hopefully he gets over this.
