Inconsistency

Back in Febuary I adopted some swing changes and switched to the interlocking grip, the following few months were pretty frustrating bedding these changes in.
By April I found it really starting to click, and May and June were glorious, I was really enjoying the game, had that gentle draw that I had desired for so long and was ripping my irons with a penetrating ball flight I never had before.
Lately, the wheels have come off. It started by having a "blow up hole" on each round, a card wrecker, but then I started having more of these per round. This just created a spiral of no confidence and awful golf. On any given day I'm still capable of going out and shooting a score, but I have no idea or inkling when this will occur! It's playing tricks with my head at this stage, anybody experience similar?

Did you get lessons on your swing changes, or did you work on it yourself?

I find this can happen me, i changed grip and started working on a new swing last October. In order to keep things in check i go back to the pro every 6 or 8 weeks for tweaking. Seems to keep everything inline for me.

Hi soundmangar - what's your handicap. It sounds 9-12 at a guess (i.e like myself) ?

I worked on it myself, probably not the best idea I ever had. Think going for a lesson to get straightened out is the only answer

12, although TBH, if you saw me on the course lately you would say I'm a 24. I think the head part of it is affecting me, previous to this if I blew up on a hole I could just leave it there, clear the mind and get around. Now it's just a collapse!

Your 15th Club: The Inner Secret to Great Golf

    I recommend that book.

You're an amateur golfer ... the ONLY thing that can be guaranteed is inconsistency.

I often find after making a swing change that I go through the following phases

    get worse
    get ok
    get really good
    get ok
    get worse

and its typically because I am overdoing the change I was trying to implement.
    e.g. weaker grip.
At the start it feels so weird that when you get a bit used to it you keep going until you get that weird feeling.
Eventually your grip is far too weak and you need to strengthen it a bit.

Getting a "top up" lesson from a pro is great to know when to stop and work on something else.

Thanks Greebo, good to hear somebody else has experienced it. A lesson will be booked shortly

i'm putting alot of my bad golf (with irons) down to the extremely firm ground. I just seem to be pushing everything a little right, I generally take a sizeable divot as I have a steep swing.

Critique me all you want, but I genuinely feel that this is the reason, I'm not catching my irons perfectly :p

I recently broke my PB but still don't feel as if I am anywhere near as good a golfer I was 18 months ago, my course management & short game have improved but long game has steadily got worse. Crazy thing is I could have a run of 3 fir/gir pars and then things go wallop, as you say inconsistent!

We are always searching to improve! Great game though:D
