Not booking accommodation in advance?

    Hi

Got 2 weeks unexpected holidays from work and want to make the most of them. I am tempted to set of tomorrow morning and just drive down the coast of Galway/Mayo, possibly visit an Island aswell.

Has anyone just set off driving before and not arranged accomodation until you get tired of driving/exploring or found a place you want to use as your base for the next few days? Is it something you'd do again? I like the idea of it and the freedom it would give. I just don't know how well it would actually work. I don't want to get stranded somewhere and have nowhere to stay!

It'd be easy enough to do, however the only caution I would have is that just rolling up to a hotel and looking for a room for the night or a couple of nights, means you'd be paying the rack rate (ie the full/normal price).

What I would suggest is just before you go, check the likes of groupon or pigsback to see if they have any deals to places you want to go and then before buying the deal check with the hotel to see if they have availability.

We did Galway and Clare the week before last and only booked the accommodation the day before travelling to Galway. Got great deals.

if you're hitting a galway city on a summer weekend I'd imagine it could be quite busy and many of the hotels could very well be booked out, especially during the arts festival and the week of the races.
