L/100km on digital display

In my Mazda6 1.8 petrol, it's displays my car is using 8.5L/100km (city driving) on the digital display in my car. How accurate is this display in letting me know how much petrol im using per 100km? Because when I let's say put €20 petrol in my car it could display let's say 230km of fuel but I would not get that much out of it according to the odometer in the car. If I am getting 8.5L/100km what mpg is that??

    Thanks lads

Fuel consumption readouts are more for entertainment than enlightenment, IMO.

8.5 l/100 km is 33.2 mpg. The trip computer will never be 100% accurate. If its average fuel consumption then you need to reset it after every time you fill up in order for it to give any kind of an accurate reading. It's not much good to you if its reading the average fuel consumption for the last 10k km etc if it was not reset recently.

Mine told me I was doing over 7.0 L/100 on the motorway run up to Tyrone in a 1.5L Turbodiesel. At the same time, the average didn't fluctuate much from 5.8... and even went down at one stage when I was on the A-roads up North. The range estimate bounced around from 700 to 490 with no relation to how far the car'd actually gone

The actual amount of fuel used often overestimates. I brimmed the car, and refil it each time it gets to 40L burned. But I only get about 38 in before the pump cuts off.

These things are rarely if ever right.

    Mine always overestimates by 20%.

If your fuel consumption readout in Mazda 6 is wrong, you can adjust it in service mode.
There's some howto's out there how to do it. No tools or any equipment needed. Just google it.

In my Mazda 6 it wasn't too precise, but I calibrated it, and since then it was not too bad.

In Honda civic I have it deadly accurate. I always fill-up to the brim. And calculate consumption. So far it's been always the same as readout from trip computer (up to 0.1 l/100km).

Brim and trip meter it a couple times. It'll tell you what the actual consumption is and then you can check against the computer.

To convert between L/100 km and mpg (and vice-versa) just do 282.5/x where x is either the mpg or the L/100 km
