Looking for tradesmen for some work!!

I'm replacing the kitchen with a new one and as a result I need a tiler (splash back), electrician (for some re-wiring etc) and a plumber (gas connection for hob and plumb new sink etc).

I got some recommendations from work colleagues and contacted them, they have all said they will call out to look at the work needed...none bar one have come out. The lad who did come out has not come back with a price.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I contact tradesmen and offer a potential job. Why do tradesmen still let on they are interested in a job instead of just saying otherwise?

I even logged a request on Onlinetradesmen.ie, not a word.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm totally baffled.

did you ask for a reason that could somehow contribute to the discussion?

From talking to a lot of tradesmen on the phone lately, I get a feeling from all the Irish lads anyway that they are very cagey on the phone, it's as if they don't want to admit to doing any work lately, maybe they are doing nixers to beat the band (while drawing the dole) and don't want some stranger talking to them in the fear he's from the Revenue.

Do not ask too many questions on the phone. A lot of questions/how you ask the questions, at this stage can be off putting for a tradesman - as every house, job and labour requirements are different. It's not like going into a building site and fitting kitchens in one same house after the other.
Tell them that you've got a job to be done, the time frame for the job, a few details and ask if they would like to give a quote.

    Best of luck

I didn't ask any questions, I just told them the details of the work to be done. Thanks for the tips.

I don't need any 'designers', I was looking for a tiler, plumber and electrician. Thankfully since my first post I've managed to find a tiler and an electrician.
I still need a plumber who is registered to work with gas.

ah come on, give me some credit here! I've done that, getting a list of plumbers is easy, getting one to actually call out is another story.

Post in the plumbing and heating forum state your location and someone there might be able to do something for you

Its mental ; can't believe thatis still going on ; I needed quite for a stairs to be built & the amount of people I rang or whose businesses I called out to who just never called out or gave a quote it got back to me was unbelievable.

On a similar note RSVP 'd to an ad for gutter cleaning AND for house cleaning recently and NEITHER of the advertisers have yet ( 2 weeks on) bothered getting back to me -no recession there .

Have you tried the plumbing forum for the plumber/gas-guy ; might help.

    Hi,
i've a house in cork city , near the lough to be more precise, that i'm trying to renovate the last while. i've the back open plan extension blockwork done , roof timber is on , rest is this week and next. i've to get some plumbing, tiling and electric work done. i could also do with a semi skilled labourer . I thought i'd pm you as well as post in this form. can you recommend me someone , preferably cash and their rates . 30 euro and hour max would be my hope, preferably 20 - 23 . I've about 6 rads to put back on the rebuild back entension , some new piping to be laid for two ensuite shower/toilets and piping to be reworked to go out over the higher roof from the upstairs toilet. Plus i'll prob need a new gas boiler installed(need advice on that, immersion looks fine)  A bit of electric work as well. not a huge pile .
i'm from north cork so i don't know any tradesmen good rep or not in the city.
    any tips/advice appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Pat
