    Hi all,
I'm thinking about upgrading/changing my current carbon road frameset from a Planet X sl pro to something else for no other reason than I want to (if that makes sense). I do the occasional a3 race and club races. This question has probably been flogged to death but any suggestions? My budget is around €1000 and if I could do the btw the budget creeps up a bit higher. I have a full SRAM red group set so frame only! My head is fried-help. Thanks.

What size and colour is the planet-x?

    @dirkvoodoo-frame is medium and white. I'm 5'10.

As far as I know, you can only use the BTW scheme for complete bikes, not frames.

Is "smalltom" not a bit misleading if your 5'10 :-) .

The Scott is a nice looking machine but just looking at reviews it seems to have a relaxed geometry-was hoping for something more aggressive. Maybe I'm wrong about the frame. I came up with the smalltom name lying in the bath.......I don't need to go any further with this me thinks :)

Eh, no, 5'10 is small :P

    Relaxed/sportive geometry, that's marketing pish!

I bought a cr1 frameset from westbrook, its very light and very stiff! I race on it. I made up for the relatively long head tube by buying a size smaller (56 instead of 58) and fitting a longer stem....1700km later and I love it!

    Hi Colm,
How's the racing going since Carlow? I've only done one since-life got in the way. The Scott is your current race bike and you're happy with it? Does that tin of paint make alot of noise during races? Where did you try one before you bought? Cheers. Tommy

Ah, it's going ok, still no points but not for the want of trying

Yeah, absolutely delighted with it, I've ridden maybe 6 races, the boards evil200 and a rake of training spins on it since the middle of June. It may be marketed as a relaxed geometry bike, but the stiffness of the frame is anything but relaxed. It's very very stiff, harsh almost, but its mostly used for racing so I'd rather stiff and responsive over comfortable and flexy.

The tin of paint gets in the way, but it's handy when I need to get off and sit down for a few minutes after trying to attack the bunch.

I didn't try before I bought, just compared it to the geometry of my old bike to see if I could make it work for me. If you're ever up around Meath you could take mine for a spin, but going by your height you'd probably be better off on a 54...?

Cheers Colm. Did you throw the built bike on the scales? The Scott frames are nice alright and especially the Foil but they're pricey I think? Anyone have any views on Planet X N2a?

My bike, with 105 levers and mechs, mavic aksiums and the power meter is currently about 7.5kgs

It's closer to 7kgs with my 'fat-man' racing wheels

If I had the money I'd buy one of those cr1 pro frames to have as a second bike! Mine is actually a cr1 sl, but there's only about 100g in the difference iirc.

The PX N2A headtube is only 5mm shorter than the cr1, not a whole lot, and the weight of the medium N2A is the same as my large cr1 sl.

    BUT

I think you should buy the bike you like the look of most ;)

That's definitely one to consider alright and the price is excellent on that link. Any other suggestions from anyone. If I could have it narrowed down to 3 then I'd make a decision. Keep them coming folks.

Wilier Izoard frame for €870 from Switzerland
Not sure is it available anywhere else. Have the 2011 incarnation and it's a lovely bike to ride. Frame is 1170g/Fork 490g
Unfortunately the next nice frame Wilier do is over the €2k mark.

Storck Absolutist? A little over budget at €1199 unless you get lucky and they list one in your size with 'slight signs of storage' (in my case, a smudge of paint which rubbed off)

Was looking at the cr1 reviews Colm and the one you got is alot stiffer than the Pro........still a decent frame tho. The Foil advertised there is the business but not available in my size-typical!

The wilier isn't my cup of tea but in saying that one of the lads in the club has one and he loves it. The storck is beautiful. Think someone uploaded a pic of one on a thread here and it looks savage. The finish is supposed to be amazing from what I've read too.

You could try the canyon website. They used to do a sponsorship scheme where you provide details of your licence. Also their crash replacement (god forbid) policy was quite good.
I almost pulled the trigger on one myself but went with a Trigon RQC29 (cycling weekly gave it a 10/10) instead just for something a bit different and haven't been dissapointed. Got mine from Cycle Division UK.
