Outdoor FM aerial installation

Recently installed an FM aerial up at chimney on 2 story house. Half Dipole folded fm aerial. Installed vertically.

Its connected to receiver with coaxial plug.

My question is when I remove the outer mesh core from coaxial connection, ie only connect the inner wire to receiver my radio reception vastly improves on weaker radio stations. Why would this be the case?

In the absence of any theory, I'd just check the connection at the aerial (& any others along the cable). Make sure none of the braid is touching the inner conductor.
