Toyota MR2 Lock Nut broken. Options?

    Hi,

Trying to replace brake pads on my MR2 MKIII. Place lock nut on first wheel nut and after about 10 seconds, the lock nut broke. The actual nut must have been put on too tight or something.

What are my options? I don't believe it's stock wheels so going to Toyota for a replacement. I've been told by a mate mechanic that drilling is not an option as it's a hollow nut. I dunno, I'm lost when it comes to cars.

Can anyone give me options that don't cost the earth?

Drilling is the option - the bolt from the hub will have to be drilled through, the resulting hole drilled and re-tapped and a new bolt put through. I had a similar problem with a locknut. If the mechanic thinks drilling isn't an option, then a torch is the other possibility...

At least I know it is not easy to remove the locknuts when the key is not available!

Cheers Popoutman. I did a little digging. It appears that this may do the job with minimal damage. Getting one tonight and will know in the morning.

Had 4x locknuts removed using a tool like that in a tyre centre, hammered on & then removed with a socket. cost me €5 a wheel.
