Having more interests

I'm not interested in alot of things, which causes me to be bored alot which means I have a lack of things to talk about with people.
Also I should have alot more general knowledge, but I don't due to not really being interested in alot of things.

I'm sort of trying out new things, like learning to cook, starting to read, discovering new music/movies etc, maybe even form some sort of interest in different type of art.

I suppose I am mildly interested in these things, but not alot, so its hard for me to stay motivated and keep at it. I think some of the problem could be lazyness. Some people have said I don't give a **** about anything.

When you guys started something new, was it something you were initially really interested in or did you just try it out for a while, and then became interested in it.

Does forcing your self to do things like this work? Is it a ridiculous idea to just decide to start new things that I'm not interested in, in hope that I might enjoy it after some time?

I would like to better myself, I have quit video games so I can make myself more interesting and knowledgeable . I'm would like to do this for myself, to feel more full and happy, because lately I have been really bored which causes me to feel down.

    I'm 21 and in college..

Any suggestions/experience sharing would be appreciated :)

Trying new things is a great start - even if you are not passionate about the things you have started to do/learn about, it is opening your mind to new possibilities, getting you out of the boredom rut and you get to meet new people. Who knows, maybe while doing some of these new activities, you'll come across something you like better than the others or find a new interest in some of them. Maybe it will give you the confidence to try even more different things :)

There are so many different things to do, see, learn, taste, drink and enjoy in life - you should never let yourself get that bored again :)

Are there any societies or clubs that you could join when you go back to college after the holidays? They would be a great place to start. I finished college when I was 20 and unfortunately did not have the confidence to join any societies or clubs at all - college was a very lonely place for me and if I could go back in time that is the one thing I would change about my college experience. That and the course I did :D

One last thing - there are lots of festivals going on during the summer and they all need volunteers. If there are any in your area or nearest city, you should get involved. You'll have a fun weekend, meet new friends and have another new experience. Most people when they have done it once, want to do it again and again. I have volunteered at several festivals in my time and it has almost always been a worthwhile experience.

I really cannot relate to not being interested in things. I am interested in everything! Even if I lived for 500 hundred years it wouldnt be long enough for me to investigate all the things I am interested in. I am never bored, there are not enough hours in the day for me!

How I get interested in things tends to be that I notice something, and I go take a look at it, read up a bit, get more into it, and then depending on the type of thing it is - I get whatever the relevant equipment is or join a club to do it or whatever.

In the past few years alone I have developed an interest in astronomy, leading to a number of distance learning courses and a telescope, 3 pairs of binoculars, dozens of book and hours out looking at the sky. Im also interested in mycology - thats mushrooms, so once a year for 2 or 3 months I mushroom hunt and bring them home and try to identify them and learn more. Running - took it up 2 years ago, love it now. Swimming, same.

Id like to learn more about linguistics, cooking, photography, web programming, anthropology, zombies, more astronomy - and thats just to name a few. I could literally ream off dozens of things that mildly interest me that Id like to get more into.

There is a whole really interesting world out there that you can never ever hope to know everything about - so you have to just pick and choose the bits you are into.
