boss gt-8 into garageband

Can anyone help me? I am trying to connect my guitar > boss gt-8 > garageband on my macbook air. I have that little irig cable but that only seems to work when using GB own amp models. I also have a midi cable with usb on one end but i am not sure if I have this connected right.
