Ireland had an excellent draw with England today and play Scotland in the morning. England had won their first match 4.5 to 0.5

Conor is different class, if he keeps on playing in the Glorney I would expect Ireland to win it in the next few years.

Interesting to see some of the opening choices for the Glorney.
A lot of English openings, with the Caro-Kann and Modern defenses also being a popular choice.
Nice to see one of our players, James Danaher, isn't afraid to mix it up with the King's Gambit!

Did Conor O'Donnell lose on time today? Or blunder in time pressure?
Unless I'm missing something he's just winning a clear exchange in the final position shown on the live boards

Assuming the results page is correct and he did indeed lose. It has a 5-0 whitewash for England :(

Fantastic results in the Stokes Cup here as well, with St.Benildus' Ross Beatty undefeated so far going into today's matches, and with Ireland a full point in the lead.

    From the ICU website:
Stokes team need to match England in last round to win

After round 4, Stokes just need to match England to WIN THE U12 Stokes cup. Round 5: Early win on Board 3 vs Wales. 5 still in play. We wish the team luck.

The Stokes results are up here on the glorney cup site (Round 5 should be over by now and round 6 starts at 1400h, but the round 5 results aren't up yet):

    | Wales| Wales| Scotland| Scotland| Ireland | Ireland | England| England| Total| Pos
    England| 5 - 1| | 5 - 1| |2½-3½|2½-3½| X | X |15| 2
    Ireland | 3 - 3| | 6 - 0| | X | X |3½-2½|3½-2½| 16| 1
    Scotland| 3 - 3|3½-2½| X | X | 0 - 6| | 1 - 5| | 7½| 4
    Wales| X | X | 3 - 3|2½-3½| 3 - 3| | 1 - 5| | 9½| 3

    From ICU
After 5 rounds of the Stokes Cup in Cardiff, the irish team is leading by half a point over England. Ireland also have the benefit of playing the weakest team, Scotland in the last round. We wish the team luck.

A superb chance to take this one down!

From twitter (#glorneychess for those interested), the standings going into round six:
standings going into last round: SCO 8.5 WAL 11 ENG 20 IRL 20.5

England lose their first game; Ireland win our first game.

    3½/5 the target now.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,279 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Scotland pull one back. 3½/4 needed.

Edit - false alarm; there's several IRL v SCO games going on. It's 1-1 in the Robertson, ½-½ in the Glorney and still 1-0 in the Stokes.

One more win from four games and we've it won. Pretty much in the bag at this stage, you'd hope!

Awesome result. Well done to all

Its a great result, there really are some good juniors coming through.

I do expect Ireland to win the Glorney and Gilbert within the next few years if England continue not to put out their strongest team and Ireland's top juniors play.

Christ, we fairly stumbled over the line in the end! Lost our last two and had England won their last, they'd have won!

    Mustn't tempt fate in future...

    Still, well done all round.

    Super performance by the team
After starting with a draw against a welsh team that all outrated the highest Irish player the team won 5 straight matches including a double over England, whose team also all outrated every Irish player. Most of the games were over 3 hours long and the team kept the momentum going all tournament long. Beating England on Sunday night having lost 6:0 last year was massive.
Have Ireland ever won any of the Glorney competitions before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 285 ✭✭checknraise

I am fairly certain Ireland have won the Glorney and Glibert(Faber) cup before but the other competitions are relatively new so I am guessing not . It is a great achievement but England are not putting out their best juniors I am guessing due to a perceived lack of competition from the other countries. You would not be comparing like for like with the Glorney at the moment as previously you would have also had Holland and France with the majority of teams putting out their strongest teams with lots of future GM's playing.

We've won the Glorney and the Faber (which seems to have been re-named the Gilbert) twice before.

Fairly sure we've never won the others as, as you say, they're fairly new.

Roll of honour from 1948 to 2007 is -

    Glorney Cup: 44x England, 12x Netherlands, 3x Scotland, 2x Ireland, 2x France.

    Faber Cup: 19x England, 11x Netherlands, 5x France, 3x Scotland, 2x Ireland, 1x Czech Republic, 1x England “B”.

Check mates: Meet the teenage chess queen
Diana Mirza's dad has nurtured her talent but many of our gifted children need more support

...Diana Mirza isn't just any teenager.

The pretty, quietly spoken girl has just been crowned Irish Women's Chess Champion, is the only Irish chess player to win silver and bronze medals at the European Union Youth Chess Championships and, when she entered the World Youth Chess Championships last year, she was ranked 36th in the world.

Today, she is competing with the Irish Chess Union's national team against the cream of young chess talent from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the Glorney Cup in Cardiff.

And there's a report up on the ICU website with photos:
    Glorney Gilbert Competitions 2013
    by Pat Fitzsimons (July 2013)

    872.jpg

    ...

The annual joust with Ireland's nearest neighbours involves 4 separate competitions. The Glorney Cup competition is contested by teams of five players under 18 years of age, the Gilbert Cup is for teams of three girls under 18, the Robinson Cup is contested by teams of 6 players under 14 and the Stokes Cup by teams of 6 players under 12.

The 20 Irish players were accompanied by two coaches, Pat and David Fitzsimons and a considerable number of parents and some siblings making the Irish party the largest at the event. Prior to the commencement of play, the Irish Head of Delegation, Colm O' Muiréagáin, read out a letter from President Michael D. Higgins wishing our teams every success in the tournament. The interest shown by the State's first citizen was warmly welcomed by the Irish party and served to galvanise the players for the event.

As the largest competitor nation, England's teams have performed strongly in the four events since the Robinson and Stokes Cup competitions were introduced to the International Junior calendar in 2007, to be run concurrently with the longer established Glorney and Gilbert (previously Faber) Cup competitions. In recent years, however, Ireland's teams have become much more competitive and have pushed the rival nations hard in some of the events.

these junior events are not about being a strong or weak competition more about delusional parents and their spoiled kids .
