UPC in rural areas...

Unless I am mistaken, UPC will have to shut down MMDS eventually leaving thousands of customers without television. Yes I know UPC's MMDS service is terrible in comparsion to Sky (and losing customers every year), with them not even bothering to offer Digital+ to people in old Chorus areas due to the signal being DVB-T and there mediabox being DVB-C. Still UPC could have something going for them here if they play there cards right, I love sky but hate it at the same time. Using UPC at a friends house in limerick during the week I realised how much better (for me) that it was. The on demand is great, the box didn't seem buggy or slow (like I remember it to be) and everything just seemed ok. Now my suggestion (and question to everyone is - could UPC as an existing telecommunications company, rent eircom's lines and provide IPTV as a replacement for MMDS and offer TV, phone and broadband to everyone (including eventually the fibre speeds everyone loves UPC broadband for)?

I doubt it. If Eircom can't get good speeds (or anything at all) via their network, then UPC won't either. UPC would have to run an alternative wireless service or run their own cables.
