Crows, corn and waste oil

For years I and my dad before me would put a dribble of waste oil around any spots where the crows were attacking. A fella is after telling me he doesn't think that's allowed anymore. Can anyone clear this one up? I haven't seen crows as persistent as this year.
    Thanks.

That's good to know. We had seed barley here for years too when the sugar beet was still going. Could have been another know-it-all making up the rules to feel important.
