Is it possible to have a high ranking site with a tumblr template. The site is mapped to a private .com domain

In short: yes, of course yes.

In long: it's up to you to rank the site, the platform can only do so much.

You can just have HTML content and get it ranked, whereas design part is just for your conversion and audience engagement on website.

If your really that worried maybe edit the html slightly yourself. Resize/Rename some images very slightly. Change alt tags. Maybe use a slightly different font.

If even possible on Tumblr. I assume it is as someone had to create the template.
