    hi folks,

I'm using gnome shell on Fedora and am happy enough with it not to change. But part of the look annoys me. It's nothing huge but is it possible to get rid of the bar on top of each window?

See here for example, each little window has the same bar. It is more annoying with web browsers where its a waste of valuable screen space, though I see there is a Firefox extension to get rid of it.

So, like I said no huge issue but if there's a handy way to get rid of it or slim it down that I have missed I'd appreciate the tip.

you want to remove the window borders ?? iirc you can do this with compiz settings manager, or if you use emerald window decorator you can use much slimmer borders, i dont know why fedora use such large borders, it annoys me as well

    I have 2 half-solutions ;)
    1. open firefox
    2. type extensions.gnome.org (if that doesn't work search how to install gnome shell extensions)
    3. search for "maximus" and "hide top bar"
    4. Install & switch it on

I'll update this post when I find something better.

P.S. There is an option in maximus settings (I access it using Settings Center - another extension) to undecorate half maximised windows, but I can't make it work.

If you want to slim down the title bar, then you can edit the file at /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/metacity-1/metacity-theme-3.xml then change the title_vertical_pad value in the max and normal sections (by default their values are 9 and 8 respectively). You can also change the title bar font in gnome tweak tool. From what I can tell the size of the bar is based on the size of the font plus whatever padding, I was able to make the bar very small by changing those too settings.

Thanks for all the tips folks, the ones I used that worked best for me were Knasher's above.
