Would it be possible to get a priest to do a quickish Baptism for a 4 year old child? or Would it have to be done after a mass on a Sunday

theologically ANYONE can do a baptism, any where any time.

midwives regularly do emergency baptisms in cases where the baby looks like it may not survive.

many churches do baptisms in the afternoon away from the morning service.

the question a priest will ask is why do you want to avoid the Mass?

if it's because you don't believe in all that stuff, then the correct next question would be then why do you want the child baptised, when you'll have to make vows about your beliefs that you've just said, you don't have.......

I know children who got some holy water sprinkled on them by 'well meaning' relatives. I think any confirmed catholic can do it. Are you only doing it to get a school place, seeing as the child is of the age for primary?

Presumably you are in a hurry because you are leaving the country soon? Just explain your situation to your local priest and he will accommodate you ok. Baptisms are not generally done after Mass, there is usually a set schedule for the event and it will vary from place to place. Exceptions can easily be made.

OP surf the net and find the phone number of your local Priest and perhaps explain whatever personal circumstances led you to ask the question? Don't ever be shy about asking, because there are so many people in this world who have found themselves in any number of circumstances that a Priest hasn't heard before.

Old men get Baptised, and one doesn't have to do anything other than be sincere, as a family in faith on behalf of your child or indeed as an old man or woman who is sincere too and wants to be baptised.

Always do it for the right reasons.

so long as she isn't ANTI Catholic and will follow you to the preists house screaming and getting on, you should be fine.

    and even then.........

low key is a world away from a quick one!! :)

I am a practising (still haven't got it right) Catholic and my wife (and the bulk of her family) are not. I was keen (saw it as essentially really) that our child be baptised. My wife was very supportive but was keen that it be me presenting the child for baptism rather than "both of us".

Everything went great. Both families were there, child (a few months old) was baptised and we had a small get-together afterwards.

Being entirely honest with your priest is by far and away the best advice I can give. Same goes for planning a wedding tbh.

My Brother is an Atheist, non practicing Catholic his wife is Russian Orthodox.

Recently they got their daughter baptized into the Catholic Church.

They just decided it was a good idea, personal to them.

I did read it. You refer to "my childs mother"..not "my partner" or "my wife".
It sounded like you want to do it and she might not, as she is not catholic.
You didnt make yourself very clear.

OP, my apologies. I was removing some of the unhelpful and uncharitable remarks from this thread and I accidentally removed your post where you made it clear that your child's mother was fully aware of the baptism. Sincere apologies.

Furthermore, I know that a number of posters have a major issue with the notion of infant baptism. This thread isn't the place for that. Helpful replies only or infractions/bans will follow.

Ah, thats why I had my wires crossed :)
Baptisms are done in our Church on Saturdays so they can be as private as you want. Ive been to one that was after Sunday mass but I imagine a chat with the priest will shed light on all that :)
