Importing car to the UK and changing ownership

    Hi guys,

Just wondering if you can help me clarify something. My father is giving me his old car (which is registered in Ireland). I live in the UK however. Should I change the ownership to my name in Ireland and then go about importing it to the UK, or could I import to the UK directly without "owning" the car in Ireland first?

Also, does anyone know how long the registration process should take over here in the UK (the car is over 10 years old).

    Cheers.

You don't need to register can in your name in Ireland.
It's enough if your father gives your his VRC (logbook) and this will be enough for you to register a car in UK in your name.

Also take a look at revenue VRT export refund.
If your father presents a car for VRT export inspection (this will cost 32 euros afaik) they will calculate VRT due, and if you register the car in the UK within 30 days (and your father provide proof of that to revenue) he will get VRT refund. Obviously amount of refund will depend on car value, and below certain level there might be no refund.
Fill in car detail in "Vehicle export enquiry" in here to find out how much could your father get.

You don't need one I don't think; you can just ignore that and fill in the info about you vehicle.

Cheers for the info CiniO. THe car is 14 years old, so the VRT rebate is a big fat zero. I presume my Dad will have to contact Shannon and let them know? Also, if at any stage in the future I decided to move back home, I'm guessing there would be no VRT charge since VRT has already been paid on the vehicle?

At least one less problem to worry about.

    Don't think so.
Other boardsies mentioned here about reporting car to Shannon as exported, and Shannon responded gently they didn't give a sh.. (were not interested).

True. Obviously assuming you won't get VRT back. But from what you are saying you won't.
