    Hi,

I went to have a look at this car today

    http://auto_boland.webzone.ie/used-cars/Volvo/S40/2.0-D/37313714665031730/

What are peoples views on this? Drove it and it was lovely to drive. Interior is fantastic and has a full stamped service history.

I am concerned about the high mileage, is it much of an issue on these. Price wise, what do people think?

This is just an opinion from a volvo owner. We have a 06 v50 which is the estate version of the s40

We bought ours as an ex fleet car so it too had high mileage but was well serviced being a company vehicle. We got it at a great price so although we knew it would be in need of the dpf being replaced it was still a good investment

We've had it over 3 years now and I can honestly say it is a gem of a car. It has full leather interior and is the high spec model, and the comfort in it is amazing. Hardly any road vibration, very smooth and solid to drive. Ours is a 1.6l so very economical. Okay, so it's not the quickest off the mark, but that is balanced out by how enjoyable it is to drive on motorways

For us it was a great buy and although we have toyed with changing it a few times (because we bought it so cheap we could actually get more for it in trade in than we paid, even now 3 years later) but we always decide to keep it because we know that to get a car with comparable comfort level and specification we would have to spend a lot of money.

We're certainly very happy with our choice and I reckon we'll keep it for many years.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the mileage as long as it has a fsh and the price isn't bad for a volvo main dealer.

Just over 200k, was about 160k when we got it if I remember correctly, maybe 150k. We don't get it serviced in a Volvo garage as it's just crazy expensive. But we do go to a reputable garage and it costs about €100 for a full service. We did have to get the dpf done in a main Volvo garage and it was just under €1000. But we only paid €4500 for the car initially so even with the additional €1000 it was still for nothing. We were given a trade in price of €7500 a year after buying it, so we definitely did well on the price.

Thanks all for the replies, I think I will hold out for a 2008 with less mileage. Should work out alot cheaper for practically the same car

there's a lovely 2007 s40 on adverts.ie for 5k, although it's a 2.4 (so higher tax and insurance) it's a great buy. I was going to get it myself, but didn't quite have the funds and we ended up settling for a 2003 s40 in the end and we're still very happy with it.

good solid feel when driving it, couldn't be happier for the money.

    Vibe666 this one is it?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/nct-03-15-2007-volvo-s40-2-4i-42k-miles/4362853

I will be driving from Waterford to Clonmel return everyday so would definitely need a diesel.

There are not many low mileage diesels around. Wonder if it would be worth my while sourcing in the UK or up north

In fairness that Volvo only returns an average of 40mpg.

Many petrol cars would beat that, and the price difference between diesel and petrol is minimal. Also the tax is €1,034 per annum.

Having said that it looks like a nice car. But I wouldn't be buying it for the purpose of saving on fuel and running costs.

The VRT website is telling me 3825 Euro, I could probably get it about 9700 Euro (8400 Pounds). So in total approx 13500. Add on expenses of 300. Which is not bad considering the asking price for the original car that i was looking at in the beginning of this thread.

Just looking at is again is that a scratch on the back. Can be seen on the 2nd picture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭The Pontiac

This S40 has the same mileage than the one in Boland's.

    £7,021 (€8,161) + VRT = €2934 = Total = €11,095 (without haggling)

There's a few cheaper 1.6D versions too, but I'd stay clear of that Peugeot engine tbh.

Just noticed the Boland's car is 2010.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭The Pontiac

How about this? VRT is €3441.

Looks nice but I would prefer to import from the north to keep costs down

OP, take note, I have those 17 inch alloys, and they take an irregular sized tyre 205/55/r17 only used by volvo and ford.

As a result I pay 180/corner for good tyres, with mid level being somewhat unavailable.

Just something to factor into your running costs if you do a lot of miles and choose a car with 17s

This looks nice with low mileage and since its a 2008 the vrt would be less:

    9900 + 2700 = 12600

Hard to find that value down here

Google Charles Hurst for reviews. For some reason they don't have good feedback. Don't know y?

I know it's bit of a generalisation but I wouldn't buy a diesel car from the North unless it was just off the boat from mainland UK. Too much washed diesel about up there for my liking to take a chance. Also I don't think there is that much financial savings going up North as the cars tend to be that bit more expensive because of the convenience for Southern buyers.

Also - UK specification Volvo's were lower specification than Irish Volvo's, up until MY11 (in the S40, that's the difference between a 2.0d and a D3).

Major difference would be full leather that was standard in the Irish SE spec, but optional on the UK SE. Make sure you're comparing like with like when looking at the UK.

Personally - wouldn't touch an S40 without the full leather.

Thanks , the last one I linked is very well species. It's the r design with very low mileage. Cost is one thing but there is not much choice down here

As mentioned cars in the North are a good bit more expensive than mainland UK, due to the smaller market and Republic buyers.

I'd be looking for full leather too. You could always get leather seats from a breaker, as a lot os S40's in Eire had leather seats.

I would advise you to make the extra journey and go to uk and bring one over yourself. I went over 2 months ago to Scotland and bought a 2010 Volvo s40 D5 R-Design With Only 32000 miles on clock and FSH. car is spotless and its the only car i've bought that i am truely happy with. I know its a 2.4 diesel but i am currently getting about 47 MPG witch isn't bad at all. and car is fully loaded with every extra like sat nav heated seats sunroof electric seats. Total cost was

    €10800 + €4473 + €300 = €15573
    (Car) (vrt) (expenses)

    Well worth it i think

    Lets not forget tax !

Tbh I dont like the s40. Imo if your considering an s40 id actually say get an s60

The s40 looks big but its quite less roomey inside it.

Also id be careful of the diesels because of the dpf is a volvo only job and cost over a grand if the car does city driving. If city driving is the case then petrol is the way to go.
